S-K Volcanoes ready to erupt
File
Nick Gonzalez will be a returning pitcher
for the Volcanoes this season.
Grass be gone
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
“The guys are hungry, and
they’re ready to go after it.”
No, Volcanoes Manager
Kyle Haines wasn’t talking
about food Monday. The new
manager of the Salem-Keizer
Volcanoes was referring to the
eagerness his players had to get
this season started.
The opening-day roster is
almost complete. Haines said
a few more players were likely
to be suited up for the open-
er, which began Thursday, at
home against Vancouver, after
press time.
A few names will be famil-
iar. Pitchers Nick Gonzalez and
Armando Paniagua, catcher
Fernando Pujadas, shortstop
Christian Lichtenthaler and
outfi elder Shilo McCall were
Volcanoes last year.
Haines plans to start with a
pitching rotation of Gonzalez,
Logan Webb, Nathaniel San-
tiago, Luis Pino and Michael
Connolly. Gonzalez is the only
left-hander. Relief pitchers at
this writing are Paniagua, No-
lan Riggs, Eri Sim, Kirk Singer,
Jarret Leverett and Rayan Her-
nandez, with Leverett the only
lefty. It is not known yet who
will be the closer.
Miguel Gomez, a switch-
hitter, is the other catcher.
The infi eld will have John
Riley at fi rst base, Richard
Amion at second base and Li-
chtenthaler at shortstop. Haines
said he expected to start Chase
Compton at third base and
added that Mark Nelson, an
outfi elder, is also expected to
get time at third. Compton and
Nelson bat left-handed, and Li-
chtenthaler is a switch-hitter.
The other outfi elders at this
writing are McCall and Julio

Asked about the talents of
his pitchers, Haines said all have
shown good speed. Regarding
the hitters, he said that all ex-
cept the middle infi elders have
shown power and that several
players, especially Amion, will
show speed on the bases.
Lichtenthaler, who is from
