The new manager of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes was referring to the eagerness his players had to get this season started. The opening-day roster is almost complete. Haines said a few more players were likely to be suited up for the open- er, which began Thursday, at home against Vancouver, after press time. A few names will be famil- iar. Pitchers Nick Gonzalez and Armando Paniagua, catcher Fernando Pujadas, shortstop Christian Lichtenthaler and outfi elder Shilo McCall were Volcanoes last year. Haines plans to start with a pitching rotation of Gonzalez, Logan Webb, Nathaniel San- tiago, Luis Pino and Michael Connolly. Gonzalez is the only left-hander. Relief pitchers at this writing are Paniagua, No- lan Riggs, Eri Sim, Kirk Singer, Jarret Leverett and Rayan Her- nandez, with Leverett the only lefty. It is not known yet who will be the closer. Miguel Gomez, a switch- hitter, is the other catcher. The infi eld will have John Riley at fi rst base, Richard Amion at second base and Li- chtenthaler at shortstop. Haines said he expected to start Chase Compton at third base and added that Mark Nelson, an outfi elder, is also expected to get time at third. Howald The fi rst dirt was removed from the McNary High School grass fi eld this week in preparation for the installation of a new artifi cial turf fi eld during the next two months. The fi eld is expected to be ready in time for the annual Blue Day slated Aug. 22. Regarding the hitters, he said that all ex- cept the middle infi elders have shown power and that several players, especially Amion, will show speed on the bases. Lichtenthaler, who is from Albany, is the only Oregonian on the roster so far. There’s a camp for that The McNary High School girls basketball summer camp kicks off Monday, June 22, at McNary. The camp is open to girls in entering grades three through eight and will fo- cus on fundamentals such as: shooting, pivoting, screening, moving with the ball, post moves, guard and wing play, attitude and team work. Cost is $50 for one player with a $15 discount for each additional family member. The cost includes a camp T- shirt. Camp times are June 22 through June 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Instruction is provided by high school coaching staff and players. Day-of-camp sign-up is permitted. Skyhawks track and fi eld camp The Skyhawks track and fi eld camp is scheduled for June 22 through 26 at North Salem High School, 765 14th Street N.E. in Salem. Cost is $109 per partici- pant and registration is avail- able at www.skyhawks.com or at Salem City Hall Pub- lic Works Department, 555 Liberty Street S.E., in Salem. Camp time is 9 a.m. to noon. Skyhawks lacrosse camp Boys and girls ages 7 to 12 are welcome to sign up for the Skyhawks Lacrosse Camp June 29 through July 2. Camp times are 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $109 per camper.
