The deadline for submission is May 29. The Jan Cline Memorial and the Making Keizer Bet- ter Scholarships are available to those who plan to continue their education in a trade such as mechanics, plumbing, electri- cal or cosmetology. The Jerry Bigler Memorial is available to those who will further their education in the automotive fi eld. Jan Cline was a Keizer resi- dent and volunteer who served on the board of directors of Making Keizer Better Founda- tion which stages the annual RIVERfair. Each scholarship can be up to $1,000. Eligible applicants must have plans to pursue further educa- tion in a trade, be a McNary High School student or a Keizer resident. The Jerry Bigler Me- morial is not exclusive to high school age students; Chemeketa Community College students who live in Keizer or up to age 30 are eligible for that scholar- ship. By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes The recent Oregon Su- preme Court decision restor- ing most Public Employees Retirement System benefi ts was a concern of Monday’s budget committee meeting of the Salem-Keizer School Dis- trict. Superintendent Kristy Per- ry said that, although the dis- trict’s PERS expenses are set for 2015-16, the next budget would involve an estimated $8 million to $10 million in ad- ditional spending because of PERS. Monday’s meeting, while open to the public, did not in- clude questions or comments from the audience. The com- mittee will hear public testi- mony Monday and Tuesday of next week and if necessary May 20 and 21 as well. The district has its second successive budget increase. The 2015-16 proposed bud- get totals $654,160,402, up from the $621,356,557 fi gure for 2014-15. Monday’s meeting was largely a question-and-answer session, with administrators responding to questions from committee members. The fi rst question was which of the 46 proposed additions to the bud- get would restore cuts made between 2009 and 2014.
