Game time is 6:30 p.m. The Beavers return junior Jeff Hendrix who received All-Pac-12 First Team hon- ors and was selected in the 39th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals. He played in 46 games and bat- ted .351 with 11 doubles, fi ve triples, two home runs, and 32 RBIs. Sophomore Logan Ice also returns to the team with All-Pac-12 honorable men- tion honors. He played in 59 games last season and batted .250 with fi ve doubles and 19 RBIs. Portland had a record of 11-41 in the 2014 season. The team returns eight posi- tion starters and two starting pitchers with 11 newcomers for the 2015 season. The Pilots return senior Caleb Whalen who had 52 appearances in the 2014 sea- son with a batting average of .265 and 22 RBIs. Cyclists get ready for Monster Cookie You don’t have to be the Cookie Monster to ap- preciate the Monster Cookie Metric Century Bi- cycle Ride, taking place Sunday, April 26. The 39 th annual event, sponsored by the Salem Bicycle Club, begins at 10 a.m. and covers a 62 mile (100 kilometer) path from the state capitol in Salem to Champoeg State Park and back. Keizer’s Hersch Sangster and his family started the event in April 1977 and it has grown ever since. True to tradition, monster cookies will still be available at stops. Riders can also order a sandwich for $7.50. Pre-registration costs $25 before April 17, or $30 for day-of-ride registration from 8 to 10 a.m. T- shirts are also available for $20. Boys searching for even keel on diamond After beating out their fi rst opponent of the season, the McNary High School varsity baseball team could only mus- ter one hit in a game against West Linn High School on Wednesday, March 18. The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the fi rst inning on a home run with senior Mickey Walk- er pitching. In the fi fth inning, West Linn got its fi rst player on base with a bunt, another with a walk and a single loaded the bases. Evan Alger came in to relieve Walker, and a ground out led and off-the-mark throw to fi rst put runners at second and third. A walk and a batter hit by a pitch kept the Lions going before a triple notched the the fi nal runs of the inning. Mathew Ismay got the only hit for the Celtics in the top of the fi fth, but was caught steal- ing second. On Friday, March 20, Mc- Nary traveled to meet the Wil- sonville High School Wildcats and took a 6-2 win. A double play in the fi rst inning ended the Celts op- portunities and Wilsonville put one on the board in the bottom of the frame with Jo- siah Gilbert on the mound for McNary. In the top of the second, Celt Tim Hays drew a walk, then Trevor Gilbert hit a sin- gle. Hays scored on an error by the Wildcat pitcher while Gilbert moved to third. Nick Lafountaine made it all the way to second from the plate on the same error. Gilbert and LaFountaine scored on RBIs from Jacob Vasas and Walker. McNary had the lead 4-2 KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. After taking a win in that game, McNary has had an up-and-down week. going into the fi fth inning. At the top of the frame, Connor Goff hit a single after Ismay struck out to start the inning. A double by Hays scored Goff on the next at-bat. Hays made it home by the end of the in- ning for the 6-2 fi nal. Goff went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Hays went 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Gilbert, LaFountaine and Vasas all notched RBIs. In the team’s fi rst game at spring training in Arizona, McNary never found its legs in a 11-0 loss to Colorado’s Highland Ranch High School Monday, March 23.
