Children Cry for Fletcher’s 1 NOTICE Turkey 'Proceeded to Attend to the Armenian* .B y W i u . iam H oward T art Now why the need o f money for the Arme nian»? You know their »tory ? Abdul Humid wa* the Sultim o f Turkey. He was the tw H tcu n ltd individual who in iH<>6 deliberately directed the killing ol too.ouo A l ineman». Who are the A r menian»? They are one o f the oldeat Christian people* in the world. They lived in a,province that lies north of Meso|x>tanna, cast o f Asia Minor, west of Persia and south o f the lilack Sea. It ip a province of mountains and valleys— not only rich but fertile. i,8oo,ouu Armenians lived in that country, cultivating the valleys and made than “ blossom as the rose". The Turks hated them be cause they were Christians ; liaud them, because they were industrious, and enjoyed the prosperity that comes from industry. Later when Turkey entered the great Euro pean war as the ally o f Germany, she invited German officer» into her army. Her army w u shortly officered by German officers, who directed that army to go into Armenia and deport 1,800,- 000 Armenians, which they did. 600,000 escaped. The other j,2QD,ooo were driven bv that army to the desert o f Mesopotamia and Syria, and in the drive the army deliberately killed men, women and children, by rifle ball, by. bayonet, by knife,' by driving them over precipices, by driving them, into deep running riven — 600,000 men, women and children I lia lf o f them were deported to Asia and half to Mesopotamia. Out of those de ported nearly 400,000 died of starvation. Then Germany turned the Caucasus over to Turkey; Turkey proceeded to attend to th* Arr, inemaus—rin that kindly, fatherly way I That is the story I A friend of miae who was on the border of Persia told me that he had gone to a German officer and said "For God’s sake, can’t you stop the butchery of these men, women and children?” and the German officer clicked his heels together and said “ Stand back, the time for mercy has passed’’. This is the story of that unfortunate people. The Syrians, Greeks and Jews in Western Asia have suffered the same kind of barbaric treat ment. The Armenian and Syrian Relief has been organized for some years to care for these unfor tunate, sorely distressed people It has received and most efficiently expended more than $ u ,- qpo.ooa Each cent that you gice will go for actual relief. Feeble, helpless, starving millions ciy for food. I urge you to give generously of your bounty. I sometimes picture it to myself this way. Suppose that .somewhere down town in New York, or in Chicago or St. Louis, there were a huge auction room, where the lives of men and of little children were on sale. Suppose that every day the auctioncr’s red flag hung out as a sign that on that day so many men wi re to be allowed to d ie; so many women; aud so many little ones. Allowed to die, jltst for the lack of a few dol lars. Just for the want of the little sum that would ransom them. Suppose that were the case, I say to m yself; <ou!d 1 possibly :ay away? Is there any argu ment I could give to myself that would keep me from going there day after day, and buying with all my power? Buying men and women and children, at that a'.U'b< liter’s block, with the dol lars that would mean life to them? It’s not a very pretty picture; yet compared to the pictures that I have seen from stricken Armenia and Syria, and all the empires of the Near East, it is almost beautiful. For men an d women and children arc dying o 1 r there— dyin r for the lack of sums that seem pitifully, miserably small. 1 am n t n .h, and 1 have all the little worries that ire c trm'oii to us middle dess folks. Wor- rie about next \Car’s income tax; and about the future of business, and where my income V ¡1 hi to if uch and such things take place. But I have a worse worry than that. The w ;;y for what my conscience will say to me, if in this hour of the world's tribulation I jlor.ot do tny share. The worry lest ¡0 my ears for the rest of my life there should he th try of a man, or a woman, or a little child uhAse life I might have saved. For they are crying over there today, stretch ing out their weak, tired arms And it's a mar- vd lo u . thought to tne, that modest*as my income is. it’s big enough to let me save the life of one of them— big enough to give me a man, or a woman, or a child who will never cease to be thankful that I did my part. They arc waiting for our answer over there: yours and mine: A poor stricken man broken by the war; and a woman, weak from her struggle and terror; and a baby who c.-i l:v< a r*l "TOW lip only you into useful manhood or vu say the word. § & * # # * * * # # # * * * * * * * **# S H Contort a 1* a faannlea* *nb*tltate fo r C astor O il, P a re g o ric.
