Cobb, of the Douglas County F ruit G row ers’ association, shows tho fru it crop in the U m pqua valley will lm very good this year. The straw I m *rry crop is good, and the berries are coining in p retty fast now. The peach crop is fair, nnd the last frost was a d etrim en t in only a very few sections. Thu pear crop is fair. Apples will be good. The prune crop will also be good, as only a few of the small sections of the county were late enough to be caught by the frost. The cherry crop is good. All kinds of berries are ex relian t. The crop in general was not dam aged to any noticeable extent, anil the fru it grow ers are greatly pleased to note th a t this section, while it was reported to have been dam aged by the late frost, wit! be as good or even bet ter than last year, nnd will be first in the m arket w ith all kinds of berries nnd cherries. Many large shipm ents of ber ries will be made to Portland the latter p art of the week. Heveral sm all sh ip m ents have already been made. The local m arkets will be supplied w ith home grown fru its of all kinds from now on.' B row nsville A dds Vehicle Facto.y. Brownsville.— Brownsville has a new m anufacturing enterprise. W. J Moore, a hardw are dealer of the north side, has put in a wagon and vehicle plant. He will m ake a specialty of wagons and w heelbarrow s. Heveral men and boys will be employed. The plant will be running in a short tim e. It will be a cred it to the city. Brow nsville has m any m anufactories, but tho citizens nro a fte r more. Case, instructor in gram m ar, literatu re, Knglish and rhetoric at the Ashland norm al, has been selected by the executive com m ittce of the board of normal school regents to take p art this year in the annual tour for teachers conducted by the nntional civic federation. Salem __ An effort is being made by the Salem board of trad e to have an ex cursion train run from Salem to N ew port nt the tim e the A tlantic fleet will pass Ynquinn bay on its northern trip. Pursued by men and bloodhounds, three robbers with $35,000 of loot in th e ir possession, are fleeing through the rugged m ountain passes north of French, a little station 89 miles from Kant Gas Vegas, N. M., on the H anta Fe railroad, in an effort to escape the clutches of the law. A t French, late last evening, they broke down the doors of the depot, bound and gagged the station agent and sjiecial guard, blew open the safe, took the money and rode aw ay, leaving their victim s helpless. A tram p w andered into the station half an hour later, released the alm ost unconscious tnen and gave the alarm . The news of the daring robbery was wired to every town in the neighbor hood of French, and a special train bearing 30 deputies and 50 horses ieft F ast Gas Vegas in h alf an hour, hot on the trail of the fleeing robbers. In the senate today Rulkley of C onnecticut, called up his bill for the restoration of the uegro soldiers of the Tw enty-fifth infan try , who were discharged w ithout honor by the president because of the Brownsville affray. Rulkley explained th a t owing to the unavoidable absenee of Godge of M assachusetts and Foraker of Ohio, he would not do more than call atten tio n to his bill. He hoped to again call it up.
