The couuty exhibits, though not as num erous as they should have been, show*«! a great profusion of pro ducts of the highest excellence. .T h e jieople oi tbe «fate d o n ’t half appreci ate th e suite and its m arvelous re source». I t is doubtful if any other couuty in any o th er state of th e Union could allow such a great variety of pro ducts of such high quality as any one of th e county exhibits at th e Salem fair. The A gricultural college exhibit wa* an educator. The ex h ib it from the E astern Oregon experim ent station whs an.out striking showing ol the agricul tural resource« of th a t section. The livestock e x h ib it on the whole was w orthy of the state. The d raft and coach bores» n a i e a splendid show ing. A good showing wa» made by dairy cat- tie, hut hardly enough of dairy pro ducts. Of beef an im ats the ex h ib it was not ns large as it »hould be, hut some fine anim als were show n. The swine e x h ib it was most creditable. The sheep ex h ib it was good, but many of th e sheep were not in show condi tion. The |>oiiltry building was well jiatronized and the e x h ib it wat fairly good. The alm ost en tire absence of farm m achinery was noticeable. A strong ex h ib it of farm m achinery should be a feature of every good fair. W estern Apples B eet. T he official report of th e d epartm ent of A griculture on the condition of the apple crop on Septem ber 1 fully confirms ea rlier estim ates ef a poor apple crop throughout the U nited S tates. The average condition is reported as 34.7 per cent. Few if any of th e states have an average crop. The Pacific ttates »how up best— C alifornia 75 per cent, Oregon- 70 per cent, W ashington 88 per cen t. The Middle itatea are th e poor est, th e lowest of all being Kansas, which is 2 per cent, and M issouri, which is 9 per cent. The rep o tt is a good advertisem ent for Oregon and W ashington.
