St. Petersburg, June tt.— Conditions are, indeed, ripe for an uprising throughout Ruasia which will la* of a widespread character. At the Pavlovsk concert-hall last night a gigantic dem onstration was held, at which a dozen prominent speakers, throwing discre tion to the winds, denounced the czar and the government for continuing a struggle which could only result in the nation living plunged deeper into debt and in the useless sacrifice of thousands of loyal subjects. The excitement was intense and on order of General Trepoff, the police at tempted to clear the building. A free fight followed, in which the police use*! their whipe and clubs, but the excite*! people fought back, and for a time it seeaied that they would gain the mastery. The crowd was eventually disperse*! when soldiers arrive*! on the scene and threatened to tire. The officers of the guards regiments, who have l>een sent to outlying liar- racks to instruct the reserves, have openly revolted and refused to do their work. A nunitier of them have been placed under arrest, and are likely to be shot this morning. From all over the country come re ports of anti-war meetings which the police have been powerlese to suppress. Only the official class favor the contin uance of hostilities, and the pressure in favor of peace is very strong. It is reported that several regiments of re- servee at Sevastopol and Odessa have mutinied and openly defied their offi cers. Trouble is looked for here dur ing this week unless some step's are taken to placate the malcontents. OPEN TO THE WORLD Centennial ol Lewis and Clark Formally Observed.
