Redmond man arrested following weekend pursuit Glen James Carroll, 47, of Red- mond, was arrested on multiple charges following a pursuit by De- schutes County Sheriff’s Office depu- ties Saturday morning, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Deputies attempted to stop a vehi- cle, a 2001 Volvo, at about 8:53 a.m. in the area of NW Sixth Street and NW Quince Avenue for violations includ- ing speeding, failure to use turn signal and expired registration. The vehicle continued westbound on NW Quince Avenue and made its way back to Highway 97 from NW Pershall Way and started to drive southbound through Redmond on Highway 97. Redmond Police offers deployed spike strips in the area of Highway 97 and SW Evergreen Avenue and the ve- hicle drove over the spikes with the rear passenger side tire and continued southbound. After leaving city limits, at a speed of approximately 100 mph, the tire deflated and and came off the car. The driver continued east of Highway 97 on Tomahawk Avenue, taking a BLM road, crossed the railroad tracks and started driving northeast through BLM land. Eventually Carroll exited the vehicle and a deputy was able to take him into custody after a short foot pursuit. When arrested, Carroll was al- legedly in possession of about one ounce of suspected methamphet- amine and was charged with felony attempt to elude, misdemeanor at- tempt to elude, lawful possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving and driving while suspended. Carroll was cited and released at the scene for the above mentioned charges. Housing Works is accepting applications for HCV waiting list PET OF THE WEEK taged individuals in Redmond. Dean’s list Elizabeth McCook, of Redmond, has been named to the fall 2020 dean’s list at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind., an accomplishment that requires a 3.5 gpa or better and at least 12 credit hours. McCook is ma- joring in literature. Elsewhere: Procedural errors will delay pot tax in Grant County Redmond’s Spirit Foundation is accepting applications of donation requests up to $10,000 from 501©3 organizations working with children, handicapped, elderly, or disadvan- Grant County will have to wait be- fore collecting marijuana tax revenue. Although county voters approved a 3% tax on marijuana products in the November election, Grant County of- ficials did not consider an ordinance to officially adopt the tax until Dec. 30 and neglected to read the ordinance as required by law. According to Oregon law for adopting an ordinance, “every ordi- nance of a county governing body shall, before being put upon its final adoption, be read fully and distinctly in open meeting of that body on two days at least 13 days apart.” The ordi- nance can be read by title only if no member of the governing body re- quests a complete reading of the pro- posed ordinance. County officials did not read the ordinance in full or by title Dec. 30, so the county must complete the first reading, wait at least 13 days and then complete the second reading for the ordinance to be properly adopted. At that point, the ordinance would take effect in 90 days because tax-related ordinances cannot be passed as emer- gencies in a single meeting, according to Oregon law. Although the county court unan- imously passed a motion to approve the ordinance, the text of the ordi- nance that was not read aloud in- cludes blank spaces that were sup- posed to be filled in with the dates two public hearings and the dates of the first and second readings. The commissioners did not sign the ordi- nance. County Judge Scott Myers said the county is getting guidance from legal counsel. This is the second time the county has had trouble with a pot tax ordi- nance. After passing an emergency ordinance in 2018 to tax pot sales, Grant County officials rescinded the ordinance and returned $5,000 to the county’s sole marijuana retailer, because state law prohibits passing tax-related ordinances as emergen- cies and requires a pot tax to go to the voters during a statewide general election. Redmond Spirit Foundation taking grant applications Meet Lumpy, a special senior cat looking for a loving home. Lumpy is gentle, laid back, and very affectionate. Even at 15 years old, he is still enjoying a happy and quality life. He does have a mass in his abdomen and it is unclear when he may dis- play clinical signs from the tumor. Because of this, his adoption fee is waived for the right home. Lumpy is looking for some- body willing to love him and give him a soft place to land.
