D. C.. the government has l>een persuaded to donate fifteen «■lk to the state of Oregon. These animals will be taken from the forest reserves «*f Wyoming, crated and transported to Ore- eon as s«v>n as the people of this state provide a '1 adequate f«sture for them. They will become the sole property of Oregon and serve to perpetuate a race of noble animals that is rapidly be coming extinct. In the northwestern part of the state there is a 2500 acre pasture that has been set aside by the national government for testing the utility of a coyote proof fence. It is said to have proven effective for that purpose and the forestry service, according to Warden Finley, is willing to give this big i>ark to the state as an elk reserve. The matter of location, however, has not been settled, as this is a question that will be left largely to the state at large, as it is distinctly a mat ter o f public interest. The Wyoming elk are magnifi cent specimens and it is believed that they will thrive in this state. Fortunately, the Biological Sur vey of the Department of Agri culture will meet part of the ex penses of crating and transport ing the antlered herd from Wy oming to this state. The food for the winter will have to be provided by the people of Ore gon. It is expected they will be moved by February and some definite action as to location must be taken before that time. Several other states have tried to secure these elk in the past, and Oregon ought to feel proud at having been successful in in teresting the government in its decision to honor Oregon in this way. Our own elk will soon be extinct. With a starter of 15 animals, there ought soon to be quite a respectable herd. It is absolutely necessary that public sentiment be aroused in this be half, as it is a matter that can only be brought about by this method. It is believed that the people w ill stand behind Warden Finley in this effort, as he has given his won! that Oregon will find a place to house these ani mals if the government would give them. bend bulletin Now Set on a Machine The Bend Bulletin recently in stalled a linotype typesetting machine that sets type on a solid slug—one of the latest model machines. The issue of the Bul letin this week is set by the new- machine. The Spokesman will have their new linotype install- e I by the latter part of the month so as to be in operation and ready to set the first issue o f the paper in January. These two machines are the only ones in the central part o f the Htate.
