What are we going to get out of
•hat $25,000,000 this government is
to pay the government of Colombia?
By con.enting to this payment we
i tacitly admit that this government
! vas in a measure instrumental in the
i secession of Panama.
It is within
I this seceded territory that General
Goethals performed the greatest en
gineering feat of history by con
structing the Panama canal, which
we own.
Central and South American re-
. publics are never quite at east re-
' garding the United States. There is
I always a lurking suspicion that we
; ••ntertain ulterior designs toward
them, with the possibility of extend
ing the folds of the American flag to
cover the entire continent at some
future day.
But we have no such intentions,
i We have troubles enough of our own
without assuming those of an alien
, race whose habits, customs and in
clinations are not tn harmony with
our own.
Is this government to great that it
u willing to admit a mistake of the
past and make restitution to the ex-
tent of $25,000,000?
Or is it a cold blooded effort
purchase that brotherly love that we
all know does not exist?
Or what is it*
$25,000,000 is a lot of money,
means much to Colombia.
But where do we come in?
Do we simply cough up and forget
or is there a hidden string to the
deal

SCRAPPING OVER THE FIGHT
It took five years to fight the world
war. It was some fight
At the present rate of speed it will
take twenty-five years to adjust the
difficulties growl-g out of that war.
It may even hecon.e necessary to
fight another war. with an entirely
different lineup of nations.
Dr, not make the mistake of think
ing that we have seen the end of all
wars. V<e have not.
It is nowhere
n sight. We doubt if it is even ser-
iously considered by the men who
really control the affairs of Europe.
There was never more diversified
bitterness and jealousy than there is
in Europe today.
Trust and confi
dence are unknown.
Suspicion and
hatred are everywhere.
The powerful allies became exas-
p. -rated at the procrastination of
Germany. They can not even come
to a lasting agreement among them
selves.
In the meantime some of the little
countries are happy in the enjoyment
of another scrap.
The volcano is daily sounding the
danger signal. It may break forth
in eruption at any time
We were drawn into the last war
against our will. It is difficult to
see how we can keep out of the next
one.
In the meantime, is our powder

Or have we any powder?
And unless our owr. interests are
directly menaced by acts of aggres
sion. who besides the “second looies”
will do the fighting?

day they will have it.
Ireland in a constant state of tur
moil, and with a huge army main
tained to keep it in objection, can
be of but little value to England.
But a free Ireland, with reciprocal
trade relations, might be a profitable
neighbor.
