IF YOU WANT AN AGENT, SAY SO. Every farmer we have asked about a county agent the past week or two recognizes the need for a live wire alone this line in Malheur county, "I cannot possibly see how Malheur county can afford to do without the services of a good agricultural agent" is the way one of the prosperou valley farmers answered the question. The question is do they? If they do they should have one and will undoubtedly get one if they make known their wishes. Tho following story is illustrative of thousands of similar cases thru out tho nation, proving "There's a difference when a county has an agent' There was no county agent in Rankin County, Miss., last year, and tho farmers individually could not successfully market their produce. In fact, only one carload of potatoes was shipped out of Star during the season. Conditions at present arc very different. Rankin now has a wide awake agent who believes in cooperative shipping, as is evident from thi information received by the United States Department of Agriculture: ''This year our county agent organized a cooperaive club and looked after tho marketing of our produce. Also he gave us information as to treating seed and necessary fertilizer. This year our agent marketed 2! cars of potatoes cooperatively for us and secured the top market price Some of the farmers in this community made over $100 per acre. This increase of 21 cars is due to the efforts of our agent, as we could not market our produce alone at a profit. "Mr. Burk's information given on the proper use of fertilizer has been worth many dollars to me alone. We have secured over 100 bushels of seed wheat through our agent to be planted this fall." ' 14 m 14 ISI NEED OF COOPERATION, AND OBSERVANCE OF REAL ESTATE ETHICS We preach teach and believe in many excellent things that we are too weak to practice, and one of these greatest recognized principles is co-operation. Human selfishness is tho biggest bother to common sense, Selfishness causes ninty percent of all crime and one of its worse indict ments is that of community murder. Too often we all lay down because some one else is laying off, nnd too often we try to make development conform to our personal notions and advantages rather than shaping our personal affairs to the best interest of the entire community. In ono field especially will this principle make a considerable dif ference with the settlement of the improved lands in Malheur county, Unless the Real Estate men determine to establish a certain essential working agreement and cooperate with one another to bring in homeseekers instead of fighting for one anothcrs prospects, they will be able to render the country a mighty little service of value. There are a number of re liable and capable real estate firms in the county and to these the value of co-operation and the cost of unfair competition is well known. But there are npt to "pop up" from time to time "curb stonors" and outside grafters anil for this reason the strong and reliable agencies in the county must bo on tho lookout to prevent n general loss of prcstage to the profession Thcro is nothing that can better help a community than a bunch of live real estate men nnd there is nothing that can land a knock out to u town quicker than a pack of hind fakers, fa In to Sa II. C. h. PROBLEMS HAS MANY ANKLES Almost anybody, except the farmer, can settle tho most important food problems off hand. Any city editor can prove that milk prices are outrageous, and that bacon should come from the fabled golden calf instead of a mere hog considering tho price it is selling for. BUT it really is not so simplo as it looks. Ono wouldn't imagine that milk, cheese, butter, bacon, lard, hnm, fresh pork, sausage, condensed milk, veal and ice cream all must advance mater lally when the nation goes to eating whole wheat bread. But tho family patent flour, that used seventy per cent of the whent nnd left thirty per cent as bran and shorts, gave the dairymen, tho cattle feeders, and the hog raisers a concentrated, cheap winter feed that was the mainstay of these industries. Along camo the war, and 100 per cent wheat flour, nnd no mill feed or else mill feed nt 100 per cent advance. At ono fell swoop the dairy interests, nnd hog growers, and likewise the big poultry plants, faced a 100 per cent boost in their winter, feed bills and the result has been that the breeding stock of tho country has been rushed to the packers this winter, and no matter how feed prices drop the price for dairy products and for eggs and for pork will stay up because there will bo more demand than supply. The much cursed patent flour, and the much scorned by health nd visors white brend was tho mainstay that preserved cheap milk, butter eggs and pork products to this nation in tho wintertime. Almost nny dairymnn knew this. So did tho millers. But they wore not running tho legal machinery, nor fixing flour standards and prices. Tho fnrmer gets stung frequently but finally tho consummer in town pays for the salvo thnt greases his stings. Becauso the farmer can quit feeding. n n M m REPRESENTATIVES WELL PLACED Senator Julien A Hurley and Representative P. J. Gallagher have secured important places in tho legislature and will make a team that should get results. Have tho people of Mnlheur and Harney counties nny thing in mind that they want from the legislature. Malheur county wants an appropriation for the county fnir. Harney county wants an ap propriation for tho prosecution of tho land fraud cases. Both counties want a lot of good roads and should insist that tho highway commission nnd the stato como thru with what is due. Wo are sure that our delegation nt the legislature will do their part. I ftl IS R SELF AID IN ROAD BUILDING: An account is printed clsewhero in this istsuu of the Enterprise of the Mnlheur Good Roads Association, which has been organized at Malhcur city for tho improvment of tho roads in thnt district. Another dis trict known as number eighteen in the Dead Ox Flat section has made a special levy of $1,500 for road building. Where is tho next progressive district? m m hi m One cure for Flu is forget it; Except to do the common sense thing of washing out the throat and mouth every night and morning. Then when you feel a little sick call for tho doctor and let him do the worrying.
