ONTARIO, Oregon Dec. 12; Gerald Stanfieid from the Stanfieid ranch was hero this week. Jim McEwen wifo and children from Crowley were visiting hero last week. A. E. Brown returned from the in terior Tuesday where he has been lookign after business interests. Al Cockram, the banker, went to Tacoma Friday to visit his sons near there. Mrs Cockram who has been gone for some time will return home with him. John Babcock, son of Mrs. Byers, died at Camp Lewis from Influenza. Tho body was brought home and bur ied here Monday. There were several deaths from influenza reported hero this week. Tho number of influenza cases here was more than that of last week. Win, Kine has returned home from Nebraska where he has been with a shipment of mules. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones have re turned to their home near Pendleton, after a short visit with relatives and friends here. . Jack Piston made a flying trip to Cord and back this week. Mrs. Jacob Prinzing, and daughters and mother returned home Saturday from Tacoma where they have been sinco the doctor entered the army. Mrs Prinzing said she expected it would be several weeks before the doctor came to stay, and says she likes Ontario better than Tucoma. T. M. Seaward and Virgil Scbold drove a bunch of cattle down from Whitehorse and arrived here Monday. Virgil returned homo but Tom will be hero for some time. Mrs Joe Fine came down Tuesday and will be here for some timo with her sister, Mrs. Blanche Anderson. J. II. Farley went to Portland Sun day to attend tho K. P. Convention. Mr. and Mrs. George Huntington Currey were in twon Monday evening Mr. Currey had just returned from Cmp Pike, Arkansas. Tho funeral of I. Fnlkner was held from the Catholic Church today. Two members of tho Fnlkner family have died of Influenza within the week. Word was received hero that Logan Barkley of Nampa died jof influenza. Ho leaves a young wife and small child who wero both nick at the time of his death. Ho was buried at Nam pa Saturday. Miss Margaret Giroux, operator at tho 0. S. L. Depot is on the sick list. Tho many friends of Alva Arnold will be glad to know alio is out of tho hospital now and getting along fine. The weather still remains ideal for this time, a light snow fell Wednes day covering tho ground about an inch. ARCADIA Many Improvements on Ranch ing Activities Marked the Fall. Build- ARCADIA, Oregon. Dec. 10 Joljn Hunt of Boise who now owns the Kim ball ranch' is doing quite a lot of im proving. Mr. Hunt bought the A. C. Kimball ranch of ICO ocres late last spring then in October he bought 40 acres from E. B. Butler Jr. he paid both Mr. Kimball and Mr. Butler 185 dollars per acre. Mr. Hunt is a sheep man and expects to raise most of his own feed. About 140 acres of the land was in alfalfa when he bouht it, tho remaining CO acres is being leveled and plowed. Ho expects to have two pit silos put down and raise several acres of corn next year. Since Sep tember the first he has had a new addition built to tho house, a new stock barn, a shed for tho farming tools, well houso with electric motor and jack for pumping stock water. Ho is also putting in a piping system for watering sheep. Frank Edwards is foreman of tho ranch and Mr. Hunt was luckey to get him as he is a rust ling wide awake fellow. Charlie Thompson bought some sheds from one of tho Ontario lumber companies and will move them to his ranch and build sheds to accomodate one thousand ewes. Al Thompson is building a new barn and garage combined. Mr. Penney of Ontario will finish loading his bailed hay from tho Arcad ia ranch in the cars at Arcadia tomor row. H e had about 150 tons bailed and shipped it to Riverside, Salem and other points. Fred Kiesel of Ogden .Utah owner of tho K S and D ranch was over one day last week looking over his live stock. The school board has decided to put tho school opening off another week. Some few families still have the flu and others are unwilling to risk send ing the children to school yet. Tho Dail family who wero down with flu are all up but Miss Pearl and she is out of danger and expects to be up in a few days. There has been 18 or 20 cases of flu in anil around Arcadia and some very bad without a single 'death. Mrs. Chester Lackey and little daughter have returned home. She has been visiting her "mother Mrs. Bert McConncl of Fruitlnnd and her hus bands pnrents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lac key of Ontario for tho past two weeks. J. A. Wallace from up on the Owy hoi spent Sunday with C. W. Barrett tml family. Thor.na Clnggett of Ontario made business trip out to his ranch Tues day. Bert Priest and family have moved to tho K S. and I) Ranch from Ontario. E. B. Butler Jr. has torn his old garage down and built a nice now ono. HARPER News of Dtuth of Former Citizen Light Snow Falls at Harper Sunday School Opens HARPER, Oregon, November, U. The Harper-Commuivlty was shocked Saturday by news received through the columns of the Statesman telling Nampa, Idaho, on Tuesday November C, of pneumonia following Spanish influenza. Mr. Barkley was firing on the O. S. L. trains out of Nampa After apparent recovery from the in fluenza Pneumonia followed resulting in his death Thursday. The body was laid to rest in Kohlerlawn Cem etery nt Nmpa. Mrs. Barkley and little daughter, Doris are both ill with the same disease but have so far re covered as to be able to move to Cam bridge, Idaho, to the home of John Barkley, father of Logan. Deceased leaves a wifo and one daughter 15 months old. He had a home and a blacksmith business in Harper. He was well and very favorably known in this community nnd his death comes as a distrinct shock to. his many friends. Mrs. B. Schlupe is in Vale under the doctors care. She will likely re main for several weeks. Donald McCIcod is in town from his sheep camps. Mr. McCleod has recent ly recovered from influenza. Burrell Cnviness and Dave Kime aro on tho sick list this week. Mary Mad' den is also ill. Tho Harper Sunday School re-open' ed last Sunday with an attendance of twenty two. Miss Vera Logue is one of tho latest patients. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Preston who wero married nt Valo last week visited at tho Harry Loguo homo in Brogan on Wcdnesdny. That evening the young folks of tho town visited them with tho usual accompaniment of cow bells and tin cans. Frank Rigton of Boiso was a Bro gan visitor Friday and Saturday of this week. Miss Baker teacher in the. Brogan schools has left for her homo where she will spend tho holidays. Mrs, Lark Bilyeu has returned to her homo in Cow Valley. She has been nursing cases of flu nt tho home of her sister. s Mr. Schroder has taken possession of the L. Tschirgi ranch which he has rented for the coming year. Mr. Tschirgi will make his home in Balsa this winter. Mr. and Mrs. Baniio nnd Mr. and Mrs. Strout have moved into the Law rence Tschirgi property in town. This vicinity was much shocked by in France.
