Vale, Orettoji WHY A HOME GUARD IS NEEDED There are many" benefits both of an immediate and of a prospective nature, that would be derived from an active home guard organization in the county seat. Of course there is the possibility of criminal disturbance within the country such as would require a number of men to quiet, and the sherriff would find in a well drilled home guard company a source of inval uablo assistance at such a time. In fact the mere presence of a body of men trained in military discipline and action would likely discourage any pre meditated violation of the peace of the county. Should in their desperate struggle to escape the inevitable defeat at the hands of the Allies, the Germans attempt thru their secret agents and spies in this country a general destruction of roads, railroads etc., or even the landing of a body of troops on the pacific coast, every community will be expected to take up their share of the work to prevent losses and exterminate such disturbers America is not a military nation and never will be in thq sense that militarism has ruled and is ruling the people of Germany. Americans are not worshipers of false gods. Still we today are paying the penalty of unpre pardncss. It is the duty of every man to prepare himself for service in any and every possible need. Every able bodied man should learn something about carrying and using a rifle. Every man is expected these days to know these things, and every community is expected to be so organized and prepared that any menaco of our peace nnd safty may be thwarted at the very beginning. However there are other reasons perhaps of more immediate import than these that make a home guard company desirable. In the first place military drill is one of the most interesting pastimes ever invented, as well as one of the best physical exercises. The war game of today is the biggest game ever played in the history of the world. Umpires, would be players fans everyone cannot escape the enthusiasm of the play or the consequences of the outcome. We are all holding mighty big stakes and both intelligence and inclination should urge us to learn as much about the game as possible. Congress is almost suro to raise the draft age limits and many more men of Malheur county will be called to the service before this war is over For their benefit, if for nothing else, there should be a home guard company in tho county in which they could learn the rudiments at least of drill move' mcnts, military discipline and army customs. Such training will not only make them better soldiers but will assure them earlier promotion. The re cords of young men leaving the well drilled home guard organizations in various parts of the state compared with the men who are sent to the camps without any military training whatsoever clearly show what a decided ad vantage this pre-training is to the individual. It also is a great help to the army for one of the hardest tasks is the development of non-commissioned officers to handle the ever incoming draft recruits. From a standpoint of county citizenship it would almost pay any county to finance nnd sponsor homeguard companies or units where every forty or more men will combine for military drill nnd training. Still the benefits will certainly pay the men to sponsor and finance their own training, regard less of who they are or their liabilitity of being called into service. Let the Vale homo guard be called together and be organized for work. Let, them face a little military discipline, and weary their muscles with a lot of hard drill. As soon ns the hang of the regulations are conceived, the simplcncss of the fundamentals and the extensiveness of tho possible devel opmenta will hold their attention and win the enthusiasm of every loyal American. It is like your first game of base ball. There were too many "why's?" running in your mind to play the game well. But after you had learned tho rules you were more concerned with tho "what and how?" Few opponents of military training have ever had any. None who take military training will ever regret it. Pb Ha Pa pa IRRIGATION AND THE SOLDIER Those who have the disposal of the public domain nnd railroad lands in Cannda aro preparing to secure large numbers of our returning American soldiers nt tho conclusion of the war. To a certain extent their labors will be rewarded. The problem of what the hundreds of thousands of soldiers an. tn do upon their return is one that is receiving serious thought. Upon their return many will find their places filled by women who are doing tho work well and with few exceptions will continue to hold them. These men have been men of action, Tho everyday ordinary affairs of life will not satisfy them. They have been used to seeing gigantic tasks accomplished. They are coming home with tho same determination to se cure results . At the end of the civil war, owing to the forethought of statesmen the homestead law was passed, which made it possible for the then roturning soldiers to procure a homo, which they did in largo numbers. To day our public lands are practically gone. In place of free land wo have thousands of acres of good land that aro simply awaiting water to mnke them productive. Here is an avenue if properly financed, that will appeal to thousands of our soldier boys. The idea of the ownership of a home is one of the inherant rights and desires of tho American youth. If the government will redeem the large arid tracts of tho Northwest which it has had under cosideration for years, known to be prncticol and will permit tho soldier boys to have long time payments nt low interest, tho problem of what the returning soldier boys will do will be solved for thousands. Private irrigation projects can do a similar work. Tho lands hold by tho Western Colonization Company within tho Warmsprings irrigation pro jeet in our county will consist of several thousand acres of Innd that can be purchased under exactly tho conditions above referred to. It will bo just ns easy for the oversea boys to purchase a -10 or 80 acre irrigated tract, devclopo it and pay for it ns it wos for men returning from tho fronts in 18G5 to wrestle a home in tho prairies of tho west. Theso men after being filled with tho glory of tho success of their arms in a foreign land, will more than ever want to return tind become a part of tho nation they fought for. They will not want to go to Canada, and It is the duty of our government and large land owners to see that such will not be necessary. isi Pa pa ms Ba If tho national heads of tho several religious denominations now reprcS' entcd in Vale were to withdraw their support and decide not to permit any of their ministers to accept a pulpit here, our citizens would protest against such action. Vet if they did they would bo doing just what any other line of business would .be compelled to do that received no more support than do the churches of this city from the citizens of Vale. ft m pj lai m American troops aro proving a great tonic to tho allied armies. The French and Dritish have been standing the strain for four long year, but now that the Sammies hnve begun to nrrivo nnd take their places along side of the Tommies and tho Poilus, their prcsenco has revived the spirits of tho old time fighting vigor of the allies. It has been demonstrated in tho present drive. , Ss Mi h (a m The general public are making sacrifices in order that the American soldier may have all of tho comforts and necessities and as much of the luxuries as possible, but have iittlu patience with tho profiteers and expect the administration to see to it that there is no profiteering. !
