"I would like to see more orchards in this county and especially in this section for I consider this part of the Malheur valley the richest section and especially adapted to fruit grow ing." "Since I have been appointed County Fruit Inspector I have come to believe that the San Jose scale is a blessing because it has made people take care of their orchards. For in stance, the Ironside orchards, in the northwestern part of this cou ty.which are entirely free from any diseases are allowed to grow in any old way. The orchards in that section get no care and they are practically worse than where orchards have been in fected with the seal, spraying is good for trees for it serves as atonic. Trees must be sprayed and thinned out if the grower wants better fruit." 'I can cite you cases not far from here where orchards have been well cared for and in every case they have been great money makers. 'The Tussing orchard across the riv er from Ontario has been making its owner $1000 per acre, and the Sargent orchard which is about 12 to 14 years of age has been making $800 per acre. This not only shows that it pays to care for the orchards but that our land is valuable for growing of fruit. Few Btates can grow good apples and I can frankly say that there will never be an over Bupply for the sim ple reason that every man can't raise good apples and that every section is not a good apple country. Commer cial apples will always have a mar ket, and . knowing that this section raises the finest quality of apples, we should get busy and plant orchards. Irrespective of the fact the scores were one-sided, the playing was fast and the biar crowd of spectators In attendance en joyed the sport. The field was in ex cellent condition, the horses anxious to work and the players willing to take : any chance. The First Cavalry had no difficulty in taking the game. It was a wonder to those present that the Boise team permitted the slaughter but the good start secured by the Cavalry and the excellent work they displayed kept the city team always paying an uphill ; game and the Army well in the lead Captain Thomas never permitted his team mates to slacken up after the lead was secured and Lemp and hia team could not catch him. The Ontario team was crippled for the opening with the Independents, for one of the Chapmans was unable to play. Evidently three of them would have been enough to have won against the. Independent's judging from the looks of the score. Lieu tenant Havercamp of the barracks filled the vacancy and the slaughter of the Independents started. When it was over Ontario had 10 holes to the good an tho Independants were conducting a careful search to find their missing one. .
