The mill is not turned by the water
th a t has passed
We know th is, all of
us. But few of us learn the lesson
taught by this old saying. Suppose
th at we take the moral as a rem inder
th a t we cannot hope to do things with
the tim e th at has passed. This gives
the m a tte r a personal aspect and we he
gin to realize th a t in the past we have
wasted much' valuable tim e.
Our lives are made up of tim e units
and if we allow a year to pass into
etern ity w ithout m aking the best possi­
ble use of it we are p ractically throw ing
away a portion of our lives. T hink of
this, students, in the utm ost seriousness.
Few, indeed, there are of us who have
not capacity for the accom plishm ent of
som ething w orthv—som ething useful to
m an k in d anil creditable to ourselves.
Let us m ake up our m inds w hat we wish
to do, what we should like to be, w hat
we should like to pursue d u rin g the
tim e allotted us on earth . And having
settled the m atter in our own m inds we
m ust not sit down and wait for our
AM ERICAN
desires to he fulfilled and the things we
wish to come to us. We m ust be up
and doing—get busy; go after w hat we
want.
Let every stu d en t resolve in hi? or
her m ind to do the best possible during
the coming year. Resolve to accom plish
som ething good for vourself and you
will discover th a t at the sam e tim e you
are helping your friends, your com­
m u n ity , state and governm ent. Almost
before we are aw are of it this school
year will have passed the way of c o u n t­
less thousand other years, so m ake your
resolution now— then act a t once. It is
not necessary to tell everybody th a t
you intend doing this, th at, or the other
thing, hut it is necessary th a t you do
hom ething good on vour own account.
It is im portant th at von act at once
upon the right kind of resolution. Put
a value of great price upon the coming
year and make the greatest possible use
of it.

to it. A great team is capacity and de­
term in atio n . C apacity m akes possible
the achievem ent of great things, while
d eterm in atio n
assures
“ unw earied
p u rsu it,” which in v ariably brings suc­
cess, no m atter how great may he the
u n d ertak in g in hand. No m atter what
may be your walk in life, rem em ber
th a t nothing is ever gained by being
a “q u itter ”
A good ch aracter shines like a d ia ­
mond all the tim e. Its inw ard lusture is
as great as its outw ard, for it sheds a
ray upon the very soul of the possessor
which glorifies him beyond the expression
of words and puts him in harm ony with
him self and the universe.
