The school was established by Major W ilkinson, F eb ru ary 25, 1880, being the second oldest N on-reservation school in the U nited States. From a sm all school of tw enty-five children it has grown step nv step from year to year. Last year was the m ost prosperous in its history. 'The total enrollm ent for the year being 775 pupils, having an average a tte n d ance of 615. The school year closed with 382 boys and 266 girls on the rolls. U nder the new regulations it is now up to the p arents and the g u ard ian s and the pupils to decide which school they desire to atten d . C ertainly the atten o - ance the last year speaks volumes for the continued prosperity and good nam e of Chemawa.
