j THE CHEMAWi BAND TRIP TO EUREKA, This month thirty-five Chemawans consisting of the band and ball team at tended the Humboldt County Fair at Eureka where the band discoursed music and the ball team played several games of ball. In the party were Assistant Super intendent Campbell, Dr. Lieurance, Mr. Swaboda. Mr. Larsen, Mr. Teabo, Alex Cajete. James Evans, John Brown, Haynes DeWitt, Walter Miller, Lee Evans, Pedro Chevio, Luther Clements, Francis Kalama, Joseph Purns, Seymore Goudy, James Olney, Davis Miller, James Sii.ith, Harry Queahpalma, Charley Michel,. Albert Garry, Frank Poratrovich, George Gorbett, Antoine Francis, Joseph McCorkle, Frank Sou vigner, Silas Moon, Alfred Lane, Calvin Darnell, Alden Clark, Thomas McCully, Amos Smoker, Fred Lewis and Levi riortor. The party left Portland on the Steam er Roanoke for Eureka and had a pleas ant trip after the various members of the party finished feeding the fishes, from which only three or four were im mune The visit at Eureka was a de lightful one and enjoyed very much by the boys who were highly praised by the newspapers and citizens of the city for their excellent music and gentleman ly conduct while in the city. The baseball end of the aggregation while they had the people with them and put up good ball yet were unable to cope with the imported aggregation of professional players. There b'eing only one Kureka player on the Eureka team. The trip back was on the Eureka steamboat and everybody was sick and bick all over. Dr. Lieurance and Mr. Teabo "threw up the sponge ' at Coos AMERICAN . ' 5 Bay and "hiked" it overland to Rose burg where they took the train for Che mawa while the balance of the party on a smooth sea greatly enjoyed the trip from Coos Bay to Portland. The Doc tor and Mr. Teabo were trudging through the mud via Roseburg. The trip will long be remembered by the participants in a pleasant way ex cepting the latter steamboat voyage on the Eureka which will never be forgot ten. While in Eureka we saw many ex pupils of the school. Among them were the following: Mrs. Chas. Spaulding nee Mary Dec ker who is living happily with her hus band in a nice home just opposite the railway station at Areata, California. Her husband being employed in the up holsteeing and furniture business. Frank Decker who came down from Trinidad to see us has been for several years employed by the stage company running from Trinidad to inland points. Frank Beach and his wife who was Lavina DuFault also a Chemawa pupil are living at. Areata. Mr. Beach has been employed in tailoring at Areata and is now moving to Eureka to start in business there on account of Eureka being a broader field. They had with them their son six-years old, a bright, handsome little fellow. Richard Decker who was one of Che mawa's football stars while here is stead ily employed running a donkey engine in a logging camp among the redwoods near Eureka Richard sports a mustesche and goatee and had a quite a French cut. Leon Parker is now employed as a blacksmith on the bridge which is being built across the river at Garberville, Cal. John McCush or as we called him here
