both branches of the service employ an
odd sort of pistol, the invention of a na
val officer, which shoots from cartridges
"stars" similar to those of a Roman
candle, of any color. The combinations
which can be made in this manner

Being an interested reader of your
valuable paper, and note the events and
progress of the Industrial Education re
ceived at the Chemawa Indian School,
I have often wondered whether or nob
the advantages now exercised . by the
white man would ever present itself, so
as-to extend to all of us Indians. My
thoughts are now verified by the aceom
plishment of the -undertakings by the
founder of the Chemawa Training School.
Realizing my position by not being ac- '
corded the opportunity now extended to
the young Indian boy and girl at Che
mawa, I regret very much to say that I ,
feel my inability to act, by being illiter
ate when called upon by . my fellow In
dian for enlightenment in circumstances
which so often befall him. This is the
gate way for unscrupulous persons to com
mit injustice, deprive and ignore him' of
every right that should be accorded him.
I would suggest that all Indians of
school age should plead with their par
ents, to give their consent to attend the
Chemawa School, that they may become
a help to their parents and defend them
in their rights and property.

SQUAW AND CHILD FOUND IN BOX.
Chicago, Aug. 7. A supposed mummy
having the appearance of an embalmed
body of an Indian squaw and her papoose,
was found yesterday by employes of the
Chicago & Northwestern railway, when
a rough pine box was opened at the ware
house of the unclaimed freight.
The box and its contents have been in
the possession of the railway company
since March 9, 1908, when it was shipped
at, Los Angeles to W. H. Kleeb, at Battle
Creek, Iowa.
No one ever appeared to claim the
property and it was sent to Chicago to
be sold.
