In the years long gone there was pub lished at Chemawa a school paper en titled "The Indian Citizen. " The fol lowing notes are from this journal of the date of March, 1887, more than 22 years ago: The Indian Helper has some Enigmas that some of our boys are studying out. The last one made of 8 letters is "No Indian." Walter Burwell and Frank Carson, members of the class of 1886, are taking lessons in higher studies. 'I hey recite each day before school. On Saturday evening, Jan. 22nd, the shoe-maker and carpenter boys had a debate on the following question : Re solved, that the shoe-maker's trade is more useful io man than that of the carpenter's. On Saturday evening, February 19th, the boys had a very interesting debate in their sitting loom on the following: "Resolved that the Bachelor's life is a more happy one than that of the married man." The bachelors got badly left, as I think they should. Iam glad to see. our boys taking, so much interest in these debates. We are to have a Post Office at Che. mawa.' Mr. Henry Lee will be the Post master assisted by Miss Leona Willis and Mr. D. E. Brewer. We are very glad to have an office established here, as we will get our mail in a few minutes after the train passes each day. As it is now we have to go to Salem every day or do without our letters. Hurrah for Chemawa the boom is on. New brick buildings, New Offices, New Bath Houses, New Laundry, New Barn, New Carpenter and Cabinet Shop, New Boot, and' Shoe shop, New Tailor Shop, New Blacksmith and Wagon Shop, New Fences, New Range, New Cook, New Hose, New Water Works, New Boom, new Chemawa, new scholars, new school. r& ''"v www ww 4 j, LOCALS fc. A, A A AAAA AAAAA A Ai Mr. Ben Harris arrived on Tuesday morning with a party of ten children from Humboldt County, California In the party were Gladys Lucas, Truman Lucas, Iva Phillips, Florence Phillips, Iris McGill, Mary McGill, Irva McGill, Clive McGill, Olive Belle Harris, George Dewey Harris. A very pleasant party was given by Miss Irene Campbell on Tuesday evening. The tennis enthusiasts were all present and the healih of Miss Irene was drunk by all from the handsome - lov ing cup which she won at the last tournament.1 Some very clever toasts Were given Those invited were Mr. and Mrs. Chalcraft, Pickering and Hallie Chalcraft, Dr. Lieurance, Mr. Westley, Miss Woods, Miss Grear and Miss Ear lougher, and Geo. Doherty and Miss Noble.
