NOTES OF THE RACE,
James Finley, after going in an auto
'mobile, lo3t trace of it and had to come
back on a train.
Michel Wilson and Ed. McClellan
went to Portland, Saturday, to see the.
finish of the big relay race.
For the first time in the history of the
Salem Portland relay race did an
automobile follow the race clear through.
The first annual relay was run May
the 4, 1907. Time was 5 hrs. 26. min.
Chemawa leading Portland Y. M, C. A
by 12 min. and 15 sec,
Quite a number of the employee were
in Portland to see t he final race. Among
them were Mrs. Campbell, Miss Royer,
Miss White and Mr. Tumey,
The second annnul relay was runMay
the 2nd 1908 and was won by Chemawa
in 5 hrs. IB 1-2 min, leading Portland
Y. M. C A. by 21 min. 18 sec.
Mr. Fickle invited John Brown, Frank
Dan and Alden Clark to a Sunday
dinner at his house last Sunday These
boys are his pupils and they made good
in the relay raoe.
In 1907 the school was represented by
Michel Wilson, Nick Mack, Frank Dan,
Robert Brothers, Peter Casey, Sam John,
Amos Smoker, Apis Goudy, Peter Sey
mour and Walter Haight.
In 1908 the school' was represented by
Walter Haight, Louis Sanderson, Sain
John, Michel Wilson, Wm. Watkins, Geo,
Williams, Frank Dan, Peter Casey, Apis
Goudy and Amos Smoker,
The cup is now here. It is a beauty,
Just as soon as the medals are engraved
we will have a jollification and the cup
and medals will be formally presented
to the school and the team.
The Relay team, together with the
alternates who were on the training
table, were entertained on Sundav Ty
Mr. and Mrs. Smitn at the Teacher's
Club, where they enjoyed an excellent
chicken dinner with ail the trimmings.
James Finley who missed the team in
the final iry out just a few seconds, ac
companied Mr. Campbell and Miss Irene
in the automobile as far as Oregon City
at which point they were met by Super
intendent Chaloraft and Alice who went
on to Portland with the runners. Jim
was carried with the automobile as a re.
serve force in case any of the ten runners
failed by any mishap to reach their
station in time,
George Williams, who ran the sixth
lap, increased the lead by 1 minute and
7 seconds over his opponent and while
doing so, ran about a quarter of a mile
further than the Y. M. C. A. runner and
climbed a hill in addition. This was
due to a misunderstanding between the
two runners as to the route to be taken.
However, George made more than good
in spite of his increased distance and
laige sized hill.
