FINAL TRY-OUT.
The final try-out for the ten best men
to represent the school in the Salem
Portland relay race was held last Mon
day evening. There were twenty-one
boys on the scratch to start. The dis
tance of five miles was run and pretty
good time was made, the whole ten not
being more than a minute and a half
apart, from first to last. They came in
the following order: Amos Smoker, Al
den Clark, Frank Dan, John Brown,
Louis Dan, George Williams, Willie
Mose, John Mason, Frank Souvigner
and Charley Michel. The first course
for Chemawa will be run by Smoker, the
second by John Brown, the third by
Louis Dan, the fourth by Willie Mose,
the fifth by John Mason, the sixth by
George Williams, the seventh by Charley
Michel, the eighth by Aldeu Clark, the
ninth by Frank Souvigner and the tenth
and last by Frank Dan.
Smoker, Frank Dan and Williams are
the only men who ran last year, all the
rest being new men. Williams is the
only man to run his same course again
this year. Amos Smoker, our best man,
will run first. His duty will be to give
Chemawa a good lead. Alden Clark,
who lives in Oregon City, and is known
there, will run through that town. Frank
Dan, who finishes for us, is the boy who
ran in the marathon race at Portland
some time ago and dropped out at the
twenty-second mile while he was running
in third place. This team promises to
make a better showing than either of
the two teams we entered before.
RELAY. SOCIAL.
An ice cream social was held in the
new gymnasium last Monday evening
for the benefit of the relay team. Near
ly all of the large students and many
of the employes were there. The band
famished the music. A grand march
was given, led by Mr. Campbell. Twenty
gallons of ice cream were disposed of. The

relay runners deserve great credit for
the justice they did to it. Mr. Campbell
made the announcement as to where the
runners came in in the try-out and where
he had placed them to run. After making
other announcements he started out for
a dish of cream. The time was taken up
in playing 'Bingo" and other such games
by those who had eaten too much cream
and were standing in corners shivering.
After Mr. Fickle's arm grew weak pass
ing out cream and taking in tickets he
gave up the job and the social was over.
The band played a march as all left the
gym.

That a second baseball team is needed
here to play the first team at least twice
a week in order to have a good first team?
That George Williams surprised some
of his friends by coming in sixth in the
final tryout for the big relay race
tomorrow?
That Leon Reinken and Wallace Hall
were in a little too fast company last
Monday when they tried for the relay
team?
