THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN S they were induced to learn more of the proceedings of the society. Before the regular program was rendered various business of importance was transacted, such as the party and entertainment problems, which were settled after all. The'.-following program for the even ing was well rendered: Original Story, Philip Moss; Recitation, Sara Brewer; Current Events, Eugene Williams. The question for the debate was "Re solved: That the Sword is Mightier than the Pen." The disputants on the affirmative side were Katie Henry and Martin Sampson, and on the negative side,.. Webster Hudson and Bessie Boles. The negative won. The judges were Mr. Chalcraft, Cyril Morrisette and Peter Seltice. The visitors to the society were called upon to make a few remarks and they were all complimentary which the society appreciated. After a busy and happy hour we adjourned. Y. M C A. The voung men of the school who are interested in the Y. M. C. A. work, met in their place of meeting last Wednesday evening. After singing songs, "Shall you Shall I?" and "At the Cross," we had a prayer by Eugene Williams. The roll was called and the Conference Committee was appointed by President Albert Garry, the committee to select young men to go and attend the Student Conference to be held at North Beach, Washington, in June. Captians Eugene Williams and Thos. McCully, for the two athletic teams, Reds and Blues, gave their reports con cerning those participants for the Third Annual Meet to . take place tomorrow evening (Saturday). Af';er singing, "Pull for the; Shore" and a prayer by Albert Garry we ad journed. LU C A 15 A Beware of Merry Widows (hats) this is leap year. Paschal George made a hit at the Re liance party with his solo, "Idaho." Mr. Teabo left here last Sunday for Grande Ronde and returned the mid dle of the week. Peter Seltice, who has been sick in the Salem Hospital for a short time, is out and ready to continue his studies at Willamette University. Mr. Moran, the engineer, worked until midnight Wedensday, working on the steam pump. Work like that gives a good appetite for breakfast. A post card received from Delia De Mers states that she is getting along nicely and wishes to be , remembered to all her friends at Chemawa.- Quite a number of carpenters are now working at the Southern Pacific R. R. de pot, taking the partition out between waiting room and the ticket office. Mr. Smith and the plumber boys al tered the steam traps at McBride Hall this week, taking out several unneces sary valves, which makes a wonderful improvement in the system. The young men of the school who are interested in athletics met Wednesday evening in the sitting room in Mitchell Hall and discussed various matters in reference to the 50-mile relay race to oc cur on the second of next month. From Wednesday evening and on the boys will run the distance of five miles and the best ten men will represent C. I. S.
