THE ' CHEMAWA . AMERICANt 3 SO CI E T I E 5 RELIANCE- The Reliance Literary .Society met in room No 8. The house was called to or der by Vice-President Abel Grant. Roll was called; old and new business tran sacted. On accoun t of so much business we could not render any program. An interesting speech was given by Simon Matthews, which the members enjoyed. The program for next meet ing was read after, which we adjourned. Y.M.C. A. ' -: The members of the Young Men's Christian Association met last Wednes day evening in their hall. The meeting was 1 opened by songs, "Pull for the Shore," and ''Holy, Holy, fiolv," and followed by a prayer by 'Albert Garry. The transaction of business followed, the captains for the athletic branch of the association were elected. They arc Eugene Williams and Thomas McCully. We ajourned and visited the sister society as we were directed. : Y. W. C, A. " ' ';. . The Y. W. C. A. met in their usual place last" Wednesday evening and were glad to welcome their new critic, Miss Royer, who has volunteereu to take Mrs. McPherson's place. The meeting was opened by singing "What a Friend We have in Jesus,'' and followed with a pray er by Kate Brewer. Roll was then call ed and another song was sung. The minutes of the last meeting were read and another song was sung. The presi dent called for business which' was tran sacted. The topic for the evening was "The Value of a True Friend, " of which Maud Lowry led. Different members spoke on the subject. They then had a season of prayer, and sang a closing song I've Found a Friend,7' repeated their watchword and adjourned. NONPAREIL The Nonpariel Literary Society met last Thursday evening, mainly for the purpose of transacting bnsiness. After business was arranged, a program com mittee was appointed, consisting of James Sloan, chairman; Webster Hudson and Eugene Williams assistants. There being no program made for the meeting, the society voted upon one subject, "Resolved, That Indian Reser vations should be abolished," . and speakers selected. James Sloan . and Eugene Williams were the disputants on the affirmative while Webster Hudson and Levi Sortor upheld the negative. While the judges were handing in their decisions we had instructive suggestions in reference to the affairs of the ' societv by Messrs. Enright and Smith.' The negative side won the debate. V fffjfc jyk iyi jqypL jyi. mjl jn jLjjy jyt jynqjaragr :::; LOCALS The Chemawa Mandolin and Guitar Club under the direction of Mr. Ruthyn Turney, their leader, will give a concert in the chapel on Monday evening, April 6th, at which time we can look for some good music. ; Dr. v Tucker expects to start for Southern Oregon some time this week , and will take Hulda Stokes to her home in Klamath: M. P. : - 1 Colonel Rand lett writes from Sail Diego that he and Mr. Stelzner are in. ex cellent health, and wish to be remember ed i by all their Chemawa; friends. We are glad to hear from our good friends.
