THE CHKMAWA AMERICAN 7 SO CI ETI ES Y. M. C. A. Jr. The Jr. Y. M. C. A. met in school -room . No. 8 last Wednesday night, with al ter Haight in charge. We opened with a prayer by Mr. Haight and then he gave us a few words on the subject of "Starting a Christian Life." A few of the members of the older Y. M. C. A. apoke to us very encouragingly on the above subject. We had a closing piayer by Mr. Garry and adjourned. NONPAREIL The regular meeting of the Nonpareil Literary Society was well attended last Thursday evening. A short program was splendidly rendered.. Opening ad dress, Gordon Hobucket; Jokes, Dollie Case; Recitation, Bessie Boles. The next thing in order was a debate, which' was well discussed by both sides, the question being, "Resolved that Educa tion is more beneficial to mankind than Wealth." Disputants were: Affirmative, Katie Henry, Win. Friedlander a n d Levi Sortor; Negative, Louise Murray, Milton Godowa and Rena Mann; While the judges were handing'Jn their reports our critic, Mr. Enright, gave us a few en couraging words. Affirmative won the decision over their opponents. ESTELLE REEL The Estello Reel society met in its us ual place. The program for the even ing was as follows: -Reading, James Evans; Song, Sallie Boswell and Grace Beaver; Vocal Solo, Andrew Bittles; In strumental duet, Christine Lane and Maude Lowry. The subject for debate was, "Resolved that sailors endure more hardships than soldiers," which waslwon bv the nega tive side. We then adjourned, - "Y. M. C. A, The members of the Y. M. C. A. met last Wednesday evening. The meeting was opened by singing, "Blessed Be the Fountain," which was followed by a prayer by one of the young men. The roll call was omitted on account of so many members being absent. The subject for the evening was "Faith," Peter Seltice leader. After singing several songs we fdjourned, and some members went into the junior organiza tion. Jit bl eti cs In the afternoons Mrs. Campbell reads to the seventh grade about "Black Beau ty." This only occurs when there are a few minutes after lessons are all over. Chemawa's Y. M. C. A. basketball team will go to Monmouth tomorrow to play a game of basketball. The bakery boys wilb soon cheer up and organize a . basketball team to play any other shop team. The tailor boys' basketball team is go ing to arrange a schedule with the dif ferent shop teams for a series of games. VICTORY FOR TAILOR BOYS. The second game of basketball for the championship of the various school de partments took place last Tuesday even ing between the Kitchen Boys and the Tailor Boys, resulting in a victory for the Knights of the Shears. This was the second of the series, . the firt game be ing a contest between Chemawa's Wil lamette students and the Tailor Boys, which resulted in a victory for the Tail or's by the score of 17 to 12. . In the game Tuesday night the Tailor Boys were again the victors. A score of 34 to 12 indicates the style of game they play and seems to point to them. as the champions.
