THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN 3 LOCALS A large crowd from Chemawa vis ted Salem last Saturday. A nice Oregon rain on Monday after noon made us all feel fine. We have more pupils than we had this time last year and more are still coming. 1 Roys, dont get discouraged over the Seattle game. Try, try again. Esther Napolean and Dolly Case are practicing a duett on the piano. "We're a working on the railroad All the livelong day We're a working on the railroad We're getting white man" pay." Do you notice how the girls pick the ses on. Friday evenings and wear them to the sociables? They look very pretty in the glossy hairof ourIndian girls. Miss Noble is delighted with the beau tiful Autumn weather we are having, and says this is the first time she ever saw roses and strawberries growing in Octo ber. . ' Mrs. Zelinski is bringing delicious strawberries to the school from her place near Chemawa. They are rather expensive 15 cents a box, but what can you expect in October? A letter has been receivt d at the school from Leon Parker, who writes from Irma, Cal. Leon was a member of the Che mawa class of 1906, and we understand he is getting along nicely. Miss . Irene Campbell arrived home from Spokane where she has-been visit ing her brothers for the past three months. Her many friends were glad 'o her with her sunnv smile. Mr. Smith, from near Pendleton, vis ited the school this week, being a friend of the Walker children from Eastern Oregon. Mr. Hulden has been fully equipping Chemawa's new bakery. When com pleted we will have as good bakery as any in the service. The printers would be glad to have items from other schools in the north west, as many of our pupils can thus get a home letter and hear of their other do ings at home. The new hospital is now under roof and partially plastered, with the plum bing work, sewer work and water all in place, so that there is no question but what the building will be completed on time and be for the use of the school this year. The thanks of the school are due to Mr. .Tillman of the Willamette Univer sity who kindly brought his lantern to the school and munipelated it for his friend Dr. Mathes of Bellingham, Wash when he lectured before the school yes terday evening. ' Miss Margaret Miller, after 12 years, has resigned in order to live on her claim which she has in Horse Heaven, Wash., which is said to be very valuable, and on which she must live for fourteen con secutive months in order to prove up on her property. Among those coming from Caldwell were,JEddie Frielander, Antoine Francis, Ellic Covington, Harry Covington, Joe Whalawitsa, Virginia Garry, George Flett, Duncan Distartel, Henry Wilson, Dan Condon, and Millie Frielander, and there is still another party to come from Nespelem, the Western part of the Caldwell reserve.
