Sympathies of SalemPeople Went "WitH the Indians A crowd of about 200 men, women and children gathered at the Capital this morning to see the start in the Port land Y. M. C. A. Chemawa relay race between Salem and Portland. Private Secretary W. N. Gatens, of the Gover ' nor's office, had givn each of the start ers a message from the Governor to Mayor Lane, and when the Indian and the white man toed a' crack in the side walk at the west approach to the Capi tol, the crowd waited breathlessly for the word to start. But there was nothing spectacular. At 9:40 Mr. Gatens gave the word "Go" and the two runners started off at a slow trot that had little appearance of a foot race. No bets were made, but the desire was appar ently unanimous that the Cheniawa team should win. Among those who were present at the start were ex-Governor Lord, C. ' B. Moores, Judge H, L. Benson, W. P. Campbell, of the Chema wa Indian School; R. J. Hendricks, Physical director Forbes, of the Sa'em Y. M. C. A , and nearly all of the state officers. Bulletins from the race were eagerly watched until the race ended. Oregonian, May 5, '07. 0 0 0 The Portland Y. M. C. A. wants a field meet with us some time in June. 0.' 0 0 The boys should get together and practice their yells and show the white boys that they can give a college yell as well as a war whoop. 0 0 0 We were sorry to hear that our first baseball team were defeated by the O. A. .C. at Corvallis Saturday by a score of nine to six, but the result would have been different we think if two of our best players who were unable to be with the team had been present. Reub Saun ders went with the relay race and Peter Casey was running. 0 0 0 The crowd of Chemawa people who went to the top of the hill at the second station to see the race had a very merry and exciting time. Some of the boys were perched up on top of the highest fir trees and sa.v Mr. Campbell coming in the automobile way oown the road ahead of the runner Walter Haight. They were sure" it was Mr. Campbell when they saw that left arm waving frantically in the air.
