THE CHEMAWA -AMERICAN s 5. Societies Estelle Reel The members of the Estelle Reel society met in their usual place there was a good attendance as no members were absent. Three new members were taken into the society the meeting of the evening was devoted entirely to business. The society is planning to give a pro gram in chapel in the near future. Nonpareil The Nonpareil, Society met in their usual place of meeting. The house was called to order by the president. Roll called and minutes cf previous meeting read and approved. Business old and new none. So the following program, took place: Address, Ella Brewer; Song, Esther Napoleon and Margaret Lowry; Jokes, Minnie Howard. Debate, "Re solved, that the state of California is bet ter than Washington." Affirmative, Gertrude Kettlewood, Anna Miller, Grace Dumors; Negative, Nora Mann; Chris" tina Lane, Clara Robinson. Time was too short so the decision was not handed in. ' Excelsior The Excelsior Literay Society met in their usual place. Much time was spent as a business meeting. After it was set tled that we give an entertainment the, following officers were elected . for the next two months: President, Henry Dillstrora; Vice President Wm. Watkiny; Secretary, Joe Dillstrora; .Ser-geant-at-arms, Sam McOush; Assistant. Sergeant-at-arms, Calvin Darnell. After the election of officers we debated the fol lowing question , "Resolved, that, Edu cation is more valuable to mankind than Wealth." Hiawatha What was, without doubt, the most heated debate the Hiawatha Club has held, was last Friday evening. As thre was no special business to transact, the debate was carefully ques tioned on the Affirmative side by Walter Haight, Henry Nelson' and Joe " Lane. On the Negative side, by Gordon Ho bucket, Jim .Vlinadngir, an I William Beach; both sides brought up strong points, and was doubtful, as to which was the winning side, until the judges handed in their, decision, it was found that they decided in favor of the Nega tive. The question was, "Resolved, that Abraham Lincoln was the greatest man the U. S. ever produced." The speakers all deserve credit, as their speaking showed that they carefully studied their side of the question. We can not go by without stating that Gordon Hobuc et especially, deserves credit, he speaking fur Geerge Washington. , The question was well debated, and we are now certain, from our last meet ing, that we have fairly good talent. . r, i t Y. W. C. A. The weekly meeting of the Y. W. C. A was held in the usual place. It was opened by a song, roll called members re sponded to their names as usual by reeit ing a verse from the bible,' followed by; songs, prayers and talks. Lizzie Frazier" was leader of the meeting after read ing a scripture from the bible she gave an interesting talk. A few others also gave their thoughts about the sc.-ip-ture read. Aft'i; a few songs, were sung and prayers v re said the meeting was closed by repeating their Watch Word and Sarah Pierce was appointed leader for the next meeting.
