The undersigned, Committee of Ar
rangements appointed at the Portland
Institute last year, beg to announce that
under direction of the Indian Office, the
-next meeting of the Pacific Coast Insti
tute will be held at Tacoma, Washington,
August 20-24, 1906.
It appears to the committee that the
selection of Tacoma will insure a large
attendance, being on Puget Sound where
it is usually cool and pleasant dur
ing the summer rime; the location of
the Puyallup school one mile from the
city with street-car facilities; beautiful
scenery and interesting boat-rides on
the wonderful inland sea, for those who
desire to remain for recreation trips that
are inexpensive and restful. Olympia,
the state capital; the progressive city of
Seattle; the quaint old city of Victoria,
B. C; the U. S. Navy Yard with its im
mense docks and warships; Neah Bay,
near Cape Flattery and Tatoosh light
house, and the delightful Hood's Canal
Route are all accessible. ' '
The work of the Institute will comprise
subjects of interest" and profit to the
members, round table conferences and
demonstrative work. We would suggest
that all attending be prepared to pre
sent some subject selected by them
selves, that will instruct and aid us in
improving the character of our future
work as the Institute will enjoy hearing
from everyone present. . Please ..inform
the Chairman of the Committee the sub
ject you select.
Owing to the San Francisco ' disaster
which caused a change in plans,,; the -time
for preparing the coming institute
is short, consequently prompt action is
necessary. -
The program may not be printed for
distribution until the institute meets,
consequently this may be the last com
munication from the committee prior to
that time.
An effort will be made to arrange re
duced rates to those attending the Insti
tute, therefore we would advise ; that
when purchasing ticket, you take a
, receipt from the railroad agent for the
fare paid which will enable you to secure
credit upon purchasing returning trans
portation, providing reduced rates are
secured.
It is sincerely hoped that there will be
a full attendance. Superintendent Harry
F. ListOn of the Puyallup School, Ta
coma, will do everything in his power to
nake the institute a success and I am
sure will be pleased to reply to any in
quiries which you, may make of him.

Teach good manners. All children to
bo taught these things, and especially
Indian children. They don't know
.they have never been taught at home to
say thank you, excuse me, beg pardon;'
please; to remove hats and clean feet on
enteiing n room. They need to be drill
ed not merely told to do and say
these things, as well as a hundred and
one other little acts of politeness:
The world is full of many things
That seem quite out of place; ;
For instance, one may see sometime.
And often 'tis the case,
A very fine ten-cent cigar
