We have in mind a young man, a graduate of Che mawa who is a good mechanic along cer tain lines. He is making between fifty and sixty dollars and his board per month at the present time at his trade, but led by the glamour of more school life and persuaded, no doubt against his better inclinations, he now proposes to give up his - work in the community where he is respected and "making good" and plans to go away to school to learn a new trade. He is making a mistake and it is to be .only hoped that he will find out that he is making a mistake before he is much older. "'. The Indian appropriation bill for the fiscal year 1908 has passed the Lower House of Congress and contains the following items of interest to Oregon Agencies and Schools: Oregon For support and civilization of the Klamaths, Modocs, and other Indians of the Klamath Agency'. Oregon, including pay of employees, five thousand dol lars. For support and civilization of the confederated tribes and band under Warm Spring Agency, including pay of employees, four thousand dollars. For support .and, civilization of the Walla Walla, Cayuse, and Umatilla tribes, Oregon, including pay of employ ees, three thousand dollars. Salem School For support and education of six hun dred Indian pupils at the Indian School, Salem, Oregon, and pay for superin tendent, one hundred and two thou sand seven hundred dollars: For gen eral repairs andimprovements, six thousand dollars: Forf boiler, smoke stack, and extension to power house, six thousand dollars; For additional amount for hospital, five thousandj'dol lars; In all one hundred nineteen thou sand seven hundred dollars. Grande Ronde and Siletz For general incidental expenses of the Indian Service in Oregon, including traveling expenses of agents, and sup port civilization of Indians of Grande Ronde and Siletz agencies, three thou sand dollars; Pay employes at same agencies, three thousand dollars; In all, six thousand dollars. Molels. (Treaty) . . For pay of teachers and for manual labor schools, and for all necessary ma terials therefor, and forsubsistance of 1 the pupils, per second article of treaty of December twenty-first, eighteen hun dred and fifty-five, three thousand dol- ' lars. Pay Chinooks for the Land WASHINGTNON, Jan. 8.-Senator Fulton has offered an amendment to the Indian appropriation bill proposing to pay the lower band of Chinook Indians of Oregon and Washington $337,879 for lands taken from them by the Govern ment; also an amendment to the sundry civil bill appropriation $5000 for a tele phone line connecting the Umpqua life saving station with the mouth of the Siuslaw River.
