pupil of Chem aw a.
Dr. P ierce p re se n te d th e g irls w ith tw o

Tree.” The g irls , are new sin g in g them ,
and th ey are very p re tty pieces.

recen tly died a t h e r hom e a t S iletz, Ore.
Mrs. T ow ner has m any frie n d s a t C h em a ­
wa, where she a tte n d e d school, who are
greatly grieved to h e a r th e sad news of h er
death.

two fo rm e ra n d very p o p u la r s tu d e n ts of
Chemawa, were re c e n tly m a rrie d in C ali­
fornia. M iss D eV ault. fo r a tim e a fte r
leaving Chem aw a. was in th e d re ssm a k in g
business in Salem .
Mr. an d M rs. W oodin are now cosily
dom iciled in th e ir cottage. M rs. W oodin
has been te a c h e r in m u sic a t Ihe S ta te
blindschool a t Salem , an d ow ing to h e r
great ab ility in th a t line, th e tru s te e s of th e
school were very r e lu c ta n t ’in a ccep tin g
her resignation.

Mr. C ooper is now a t work, when the
w eather p erm its, fittin g up th e fern ery on
th e n o rth side of th e b an d stan d . He is
closely follow ing th e suggestions ottered
by C apt. T onner, while here la st spring,
and when com pleted th is will be one of
th e m o st b eau tifu l sp o ts on o u r lawn.
Flow ers are bloom ing in the hospital
flow er beds. P rim roses, cow slips and vio­
le ts have been in bloom for several weeks.
Mib. S h e rra rd sta te s th a t th e m ignonettes
have been in bloom all w inter. This is
say ing a great deal for o u r clim ate when
you c o n sid er th a t these p la n ts are easily
k illed by th e cold.
A n issue of th e Los A ngeles Tim es, a fte r
th e R iverside-C arlisle game, co ntained a
lai ge carto o n of Ben N efus, form erly of
Chem aw a, but now c ap tain of th e R iver­
side In d ia n football team . The Tim es
spoke very highly of C apt. N efus, and
sta te d th a t he o u tp lay ed Jo h n so n , C a r­

g en tlem en had m ade to Chem awa and
th ey were well pleased w ith the school and
th e warm, m ild clim ate of Oregon. Col.

C hem aw a is soon to have a hop y ard .
A bout 10 acres will be plowed and p lan ted
th is spring. In asm u ch as a large n u m b er
of p u p ils a t Chem aw a are from th re e of
th e g re a te s t hop p roducing states in the
U nion, Oregon. W ashington and C alifo r­
nia, it has been decided to estab lish a hop
y ard a t th e school in o rd e r to teach th e
p u p ils how to grow and cu re hops. Each
y e ar p u p ils have picked in th e n eig h b o r­
ing fields b u t have had no o p p o rtu n ity to
gain an in sig h t in to th is g reat in d u stry ,
o th e r th a n to s trip th e blossom s from th e
vines. The e n tire w ork of plowing, p la n t­
ing, tra in in g and d ry in g th e hops will be
p erfo i m ed by th e pupils, th u s giving them
an o p p o rtu n ity of gaining a tho ro u g h
know ledge of hop growing.
