I have yet to find the woman who is as
curious as the average man, so says one of
Chemawa's curious ones.
Not long ago an article of congratulation,
appeared in the Southern Workman, on
Miss Maggie Mitchell's position as assist
ant laundress, at Chemawa. Chemawa's
assistant laundress' name is"Mrs." Maggie
Mitchell, who has a large family and hails
from Washington State, where she was
born and raised and never attended school
at Hampton. .
Manuel Robles is the proud possessor of
a 17-key Buffet Bb. clarionet, which he
bought partly with his owii hard earned
money. Manuel picked hops last fall and
saved his money and said that when he got
enough he was going to get himself a good
instrument, and be stayed with his word.
We would like to see more of the band boys
follow this example. It shows that be has
1 ts of stick-to-it-ive ness in his mind.
Try, by all means, to accomplish your
efforts. When you say anything live up
to it. If you don't intend to live up to
what you say, don't say it. People who say
the most generally say the least,
Chemawa's Health Record.
The health record of Chemawa has never
been so good as it is to-day. There has
not been a death among our number since
last July, for which we are thankful to
God, and our kind, faithful and capable
physician Dr. Stephenson and his assist
ants. Dr. Stephenson has won the hearts,
respect and confidence of the pupils and
employes of this school, and has proven
himself to be a most efficient and capable
physician. A kind courteous gentleman
and a manly man. Mrs. Sherrard, first
assistant, is a first clas9 trained , nurse
and thoroughly understands hospital
work. The Chemawa boys and girls have
much to be thankful for, and especially
that they have a good kind Physician and
nurse to whom they can go to at all times
without fear, when they are sick and in
need of medical aid and attention.
BENEFIT OREGON INDIANS.
More Brick Buildings at Chemawa
School.
Washington, Jan. 16. An amendment
to the Indian appropriation bill has been
offered by Senator Mitchell, providing for
new buildings at the Chemawa Fchool, as
follows: Brick auditorium, $15,000; brick
hospital, $12,000; building for employes,
$2,500.
The amendment ulso provides for the
ratification of the treaty with the Klamath
Indians, and the payment to them of
$537,007 for lands which they are to relin
quish to the government. After the pay
ment of just debts from this fund, the
balance, together with $350,000 shall be paid
to the Indians, or expended for their benefit
by the Secretary of the Interior, payments
not toexceed 10 per cent of the fund per
annum. Capital Journal.
