THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN. 3 Cbe Garden and Orchard. Our drier has a capacity of 110 bushels of fruit. Silas Moon attends to tbe night turn of running the drier. The fruit has an excellent gloss this year, an evidence of a large percentage of sugar. James Smith, Frank Decker and William Palmer have been among the spreaders at the drier. Pickled tomatoes ate next in order. About three acres of green tomatoes tire ready. for the ptcklera. Five thousand half-gallon jnrs have been filled with fruit and about 210 gallons of prune butter made todate. Uheraawa buys no prunes having plenty to dry, run, preserve and make butter. This means health and strength for our pupils. The pupils' kitchen, the hospital kitchen and the domestic science kitchen are all I) nay canning and preserving fruit these days. Hauerkraut, yes Chemawa' is dutch enough to like sauerkraut.. Thousand of head of cabbxge are uplifting so they must b worked up into sauerkraut. These nre busy days for Mr. Westley and iia targe force of gardeners and special details. Everybody is busy harvesting Cliemawfl's crop of Italian ai.d Petite prunes. Oni'tns are being pulled and made rtndy for storage and potatoes are also Onions! Did you say you had 10-inch Onions, Carlisle? Our old laundry hiiildmg hat been abandoned and a fine Blefven's Fruit D.ier h is been installed and now we can dry our own fruit. Mr. West ley Iwruuglily understands this work and a full force of boys can be seeu there day and night dipping, spreading, flMicg the drier and emptying the dried fruit from the trays into bios. Cbe Dairy. Our shorthorns are in good condition and make a fine looking herd. A dairy has been added to Chemawa's industries. We have had cows heretofore but now we are to have an up-to-date dairy with plenty o milk and butter. The position of Dairyman has ben al lowed and Mr. E. Godwin of Portland, baa been appointed to the position. Mr. God win has arrived and taken charge of tbe Dairy. Industrial notes Tracy Hatch is making a suit of clothes for Mr. R. G. Henderson, Post Nicholas Lewis Is making a very neat suit of clothes for Supervisor Edwiu L. Chalcraft. Mr. Hilb, assisted by Mr. Godwin and a force of carpenter boys, is busy puttlntz up Chemawa's new root-house, which was badly needed to Btore our onions, potatoes and vegetables for winter use. Chemawa is a busy place these days. On all haiidt can be gnen a force of indus trial workers. The fanner, Mr. Childers, wltti bis force burning brush; Mr. Becker, the engineer, and his boy g making tempo rary connections for office, diurgiug up and laying gewer, preparing to move Btearu hea'ing-pipe to office etc., e'C. ; Mr. Brew er, in addition to his regular work, is su perintending aewer-dlteh digging, water pipo line, etc., etc.; Mr. Cooper, the indus trial fettcher, with a force of little tmys cleaning old brick and moving to office ad preparing the lawn for levulinn; Mr, Wood and hi carpenters, white keeping his eye on the house movers to see that they do whit ever is right, getting the girl' building ready for occupation; Mr. Htoudenmeyer and the painters, oiling the rl or of the girls' new building and paint lug the outside of the old.
