Report for Feb 18 The memberB of the Reliance met in their usual room Tlie meeting was not very lively, atlll they had a very good debate. The question for debate , was Which has done the most for man kind, the printing preea or steam engine? The judges' decision was a tie. ESTELLE REELS. The Excelsior Litarary Society elected Dew officers on Thursday night. Tbe fol lowina boys have been elected. President, Wm. I ngram; Vice President, James Smith; Secretary, Albert Payne; Treasurer, John Raub; Bergt, at Arms, Nicholas Lewis. The election wag conducted in an expeditious manner and all business done quickly fib it should be done, The society shows a marked improvement in this re spect The question for debate, "Resolved, that Tennyson la a greater poet than Long fellow" was decided for the negative. Mr. Ingram and Mr. Smith were the principal speakers. The debate was well argued and showed that the Speakers had well e msidertd their subject. Y, W, C. A. Notes. At tbe Salem Indian Training School there are 110 young women, and about six ty little girls. This is a delightful place to visit and is well named Chemawa, mean ing happy hme. Durimr Mias Stafford's visit in January, a large reception was given by the two Associations In the gym iiHHimu to about one hundred of ttie school and faculty. After a musical program by the band and several soloists, games were played atthemanvtablessoattered through the hall and later the guests were refreshed with chocolate and cake served nylhegirl. The membership was more than doubled that week and all committees went to work with reat enthusiasm. Miss Minerva Me Daniels is the new president. Ex, The Institute. The polls have closed and the votoson location of the Institute fcr the Fourth District have all been recorded and count ed and tbe result shows thas Newport, Oregon, is the choice of a la rite majority of the Indian workers in the states of Mouta na, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon; Newport hatfinn a clear majority overall. The following is the vote: Che mawn, Oregon, SO votes; Newport, Ore gon, 129 votes; Pendleton, Oregon, B votes Pnokane, Wash., 26 votes; Seattle, Wash., 66 votes. A letter from the local management at Newport assures the Institute the free use of their large auditorium which has a capacity of 8000 and also free camping privileges for those who may desire to do so. Hotel accommodations will be an nounced as soon as rates can be obtained. Newport, is located rlfrht on the Ocean, has a fine beach, splendid bathing and at the time of the I net I lute will have a popu lation of several thousand people.
