TO Monday. June 7, 1908 F IR S T W O M A N ’S E D IT IO N A special staff com posed en tirely of wom en h e re w ith .p re se n ts to the re a d ers of the W eekly the first annual w om an's edition. T h ey are indebted for help and su ggestions to m em bers of the reg u lar stalt and to Prof. C ar- son. B eing inexperienced in jo u rn a l istic work they are g ratefu l for the help given them . In ed itin g this num ber, the women are d ing what is alread y an e sta b lish ed custom in several u n iv ersities in the co u n try . File I niversity of I ali- fornia has an annual w om en’s day on which the girls get out an issue of the Daily C alifornian. T h e N o rth w estern staff resigns its position the second week in April w hen the wom en have com plete charge of the paper d u rin g the whole week. T h e object is to give the wom en an o p p o rtu n ity to present w hat is of e s pecial in terest to them , and to enter a held of college w ork which is new to them . T he g irls becom e alert in w atch in g events d u rin g the tim e that they are g ath erin g new s for th eir n u m ber. N o week this y ear has been more closely w atched than the past week w hen the editors w ere on the lookout for all ev en ts in connection w ith the ATHLETIC NEEDS E very stu d en t in the U niversity know s th a t separate gym nasium s are needed for the men and wom en, but verv few, even of the wom en th e m selves, recognize their great need for a w om an's gym nasium with g re ater facilities for right physical develop m ent. It is becom ing a great problem , es pecially in large cities, for girls and wom en to get enough exercise to keep them in good health. In the eastern cities, it is the usual th in g for from one th ird to one half of the high school girls to break down about E a ste r and not finish th eir year's work. It is m uch less of a problem in the W est, less in a tow n the size of E ugene than in the cities hut it will becom e m ore of one as the population in creases. It would he b etter, how ever, to provide adequate m eans now for keeping the girls here in good health than to wait until the problem becom es g re a te r’ A new and w ell-equipped g y m n asi um with in stru cto rs who can devote th eir whole time to the girls w ould be a beginning. T here should be a sw im m ing tank in connection w ith the g y m nasium where any girl who w ished to learn t o swim would have a chance to do so. A boat-house on the race w here those who do not care to ow n canoes could rent them , w ould give m any of the girls a chance to get m ore o u t- of-door exercise, if th is were under the control of the U n iv e rsity , a rule could be made p re v e n tin g those not able to swim from u sin g canoes. * M any girls would learn to play te n nis if there were m ore co u rts. T he court is used now m ainly by those w ho know how to play, so th a t be g in n ers do not have a chance. If som e of the courts could be m ade in a less conspicuous place som e w ho feel tim id about try in g so m eth in g new before a crow d, would be m ore apt to play. T he gym nasium should have p len ty of lockers and show ers, facilities for basketball, handball, and even for in door track work, and, of course, dumb- bells, Indian clubs, w eig h ts and all th a t the gym nasium has now . Each girl should be m easured and given w ork acco rd in g to her needs. T h is w ould insure d evelopm ent in th e rig h t direction and p rev en t th e g irls from overdoing. T h o u g h such a g y m n asiu m is, of course, beyond th e p resen t m eans of the U niversity, it is to be hoped th a t a beg in n in g will be m ade in th is d i rection and th a t th e U n iv ersity girls will never have th e ir h ealth serio u sly injured for lack of exercise. H E L P IN G TO M A K E T H E IR W AY W hile the U n iv e rsity q u estio n w as being exploited by its friends and en e mies, m uch w as said ab o u t th e men in the stu d en t body w ho m ade th e ir ow n way. N ot m uch w as said ab o u t th e w ay in w hich th e w om en help th e m selves in g e ttin g th e ir ed u catio n . T he num ber of those w ho pay all th e ir ow n expenses is not large, b u t alm ost ev ery girl in school helps m ore or less. M any teach school for a y e a r or tw o , or for a few m o n th s a t a tim e. Som e tu to r. A num ber do sten o g ra p h ic and office w ork. T h ere are not v ery m any g irls w ho do not know how to cook at least one dish, while a good m any can su p e rin tend and p rep are a w hole m eal. Som e have had th e experience of cooking for a h a rv e stin g crew , lo g g in g or m ining cam p, or for sh eep h erd ers. A ny girl who can m anage well enough to fu r nish a tab le for such a crow d of men will p ro b ab ly not be at a loss when it com es to p re p a rin g a m eal at hom e, or som e dish for a picnic or spread.
