Girls and Gossip It is one of the most natural things H as Had a Most Prosperous Year— in the w orld for girls, when they m eet Four Men on Varsity Debat to discuss the good or bad qualities of ing Team T'lie L au rean L iterary society, the oldest in the U niversity, held its last m eetin g S atu rd ay evening. D u rin g the past y ear the L aurean society has had a m ost prosperous year. F o u r m em bers of the organization, Bond, W h eal don, T o w n sen d and E aton have won places on the V arsity d eb atin g team s while the in terstate oratorical con test was this year won from Idaho and W ash in g to n by a L aurean m em ber, Jesse I I . Bond. In in terso ciety debate the L aurean F resh m an team , although a stro n g trio, lost to the P hilologian F reshm en by a close tw o to one decision. In the freshm an class some rem arkably stro n g m aterial is on hand, who, from all signs, can fully keep up the reputation of the society in years to come. D ebating work in the L aurean so ciety halls has done much to tu rn out m any stro n g and able men. A m ong the noted L aurcans who have been g rad u ated from the U niversity of O re gon are Judge L aw rence T. H arris, Ju d g e E. O. P otter, and Ju d g e Chas. M oriarty. To tell of their good qualities, to discuss the rea sons or causes for acts of kindness or unkindness, of charity or selfishness is very n atu ral. As we know, com pari sons are the most natural and the clearest m eans of explanation, and it cannot be judged entirely out of place to com pare the good tra its of one characted w ith the poorer tra its of an o th er and vice versa. T his reason ing m ay not seem ju st to the enem y of gossip— b u t it is true, nevertheless. 'I'lie real harm done am ong girls in this m anner is that the conversation grow s, and appears in a different light when it oversteps the bounds of a friendly chat. The girls m ust not throw broadcast, what they have been discussing am ong them selves. If a girl could only learn that if she m ust repeat, the repitition shall not exceed the original in anv m anner w hatsoever, file tone in which the com m ent is said and the occasion make all the dif ference in the world. If girls would rem em ber ibis it would do more for the lessening of gossip than all the non-gossip clubs th a t could be formed. E.
