A STR IN G OF V IC TO R IES The week ju st closed lias been a félicitions one lor the U niversity of O regon. Since o ur last edition of the W eekly our track team has defeated W ash in g to n and Idaho on the tra c k ; our baseball team has won tw o out of three gam es p lay ed ; M ax Snow has won the singles in the tennis to u rn a ment giving ( fregón the n o rth w est cham pionship in this e v e n t; and to cap the clim ax of all these victories, I esse 11. I »ond, ’09, w ith his m asterful o ratio n "T h e E volution of C h a ra c te r,” has been successful in w inning first place in the In te rsta te O ratorical C on test over the rep resen tativ es of the S tate U niversities ot Idaho and W a sh ington. X’erilv ( fregón stu d en ts have good reason for rejoicing over what our rep resen tativ es in the various lines of activity have done lor us. The loyalty that has been shown during the trying m onths of the last y ear is com m endable. F aculty, alum ni and stu d en ts alike have stood firm and rem ained loyal to our U niversity even when th in g s looked blackest. T his kind of spirit will continue to bring victories to ( fregón, ( fur faculty m em bers have unselfishly gone w ith out pay d u rin g the last three m onths for the sake of the U niversity ; our al um ni have neglected their business ami th eir professions to devote all their en erg ies to the passage of the appro p riation bill. S tu d en ts have caught still in d o u b t; but from all inform ation available the voters of the state have endorsed the bill and higher educa tion by a good m ajority. In all the cities and large tow ns the I niversity got good m ajorities while even in the more rem ote districts the "esults were very good. '1'he com m ittee in charge of the ap p ro p riatio n bill was com posed wholly of m em bers of the alum ni of the in sti tution. T hese men have labored hard all d u rin g “e le c t’on season to see the m easure passed. To their zealous work coupled with the loyalty show n bv o th er alum ni and friends of the U ni versity, (freg o n students can look as the cause of our success. T h e m atter of w inning votes for the U niversity was very largely one of advertisem ent. Those who know con ditions at the varsity and her needs were, generally speaking, w illing to support any m easure for her b e tte r m ent, but those who were not fam iliar with the varsity’s w ork were in doubt as to the proper w ay to vote. 1 his class of people were reached by letters, circulars and cards, pleading the v ar sity ’s cause. The m en whe planned it all, who carried the m easure through are C. N. M cA rthur, L. R. A lderm an, Allen 11. Eaton. H om er I. K eeney and H om er If. Angell.
