BOYS’ CLUB, PHI A LPH A PI W ork During the Past Y eir Has Been Very Succew f MIy Carried on By Y. M. C. A. Men. ✓ , (By H. A. Dalzell. '10.) Boy’s work has only been a part of the local Y. M. C. \. w irk a little over a year, yet it is al eady on? of til? most im portant d ep artm ents of til? associa tion. Its prim a v purpose is the o r ganization of Boys’ Bible C lubs in and about Lug m •. In addition to Bi ble study, the te d purpose, athletics, d eb atin g and social activities have been introduced merely for diversion. In order to enroll as m any boys as possible in Bible Study, the Boys’ com m ittee last fall changed the Beta Sigm a Xu club, organized December, 1906, to the Alpha chapter of the I’lii A lhpa Pi, a boys' fratern ity under the M assachusetts com m ittee on Bovs' W ork. T his chapter had 40 m em bers and four leaders from the U niversity. It prospered. In N ovem ber, the Beta C hapter, with T w enty boys and leaders represented Eugene at the State C onventio in C or ei 1 s. February 21. W hile ex- *nd ng the work it is also hoped to make it more intensive and bring the Bible into closer relation with the boys of Eugene. .Mr. W ebster Kincaid has presented to the U niversity of O regon L ibrary a hundred bound volumes of federal and state docum ents and a large num ber of state pam phlets. F o rty of the bound volum es are reports of in su r ance com panies and state auditors, very useful to classes in Econom ics and a num ber of the pam phlets are equal ly im portant. Dr. Sh un took as his su b ject “ E x plosives" and proved him self a m ost thorough m aster of his topic. H e d em o n strated the different explosive ibilities of d e to n a tin g gas, nitro-iodide, and n itro -g ly cerin e by p re p a rin g and exploding those com pounds in the club room. 11 is lecture was v ery in stru c tive and e n te rta in in g and d ealt large ly with the force and ra p id ity of pro pagation of the different gases form ed.
