O il February 28, the stu d en ts and townspeople will be given an o p p o r tunity to pass judgm ent upon the com parative excellence of the senior class of this year along the lines of dram atic ability. 'Phis is the date upon which the pick and choice of the 08’s will “stru t and fret” upon the stage of the Eugene T heatre ami attem p t, w ith the aid of native talent and added skill acquired through four years of rigorous training in rhetoric and elocution to interpret the lines of S h erid an 's fam ous plav “ The Rivals.” H eretofore it has been the custom for g ra d u a tin g classes to appear in dram as centered about ancient life, as they have deem ed the costum s and environm ent of those tim es to be more in keeping with their classical features and senioral dignity. But the class of PHIS has been noted in its four years history, both for its u tter disregard for custom s and precedents and its love of innovation, and this instance only em phasizes the consist ency of its actions. Secure in the be lief that their countenances are ex p res sive of enough intelligence and dignity to render unnecessary the aid of habil- ato ry accessories, the mem bers of the class have decided upon a m odern p ro duction, and th eir selection is as inde pendent and original in character as it is bold and audacious in being, a play that has been made famous by the most renow ned actor of modern tim es, the late Joseph Jefferson. ’ Prof. I.
