DISTRICT 4: Assistant District Director (2 positions available) What are your qualifications for this office? Name John Stanle y Cook Homecare Karen S. Joaquin 0HS Other union experience: Why are you seeking this office, your goals? Goals for your District? Biggest single issue/how to resolve? Other info: 1 have served on Local 99's boards for the past 2 years. 1 am a Steward and was on our bargaining team negotiating our second contract. 1 have completed several trainings, both SEIU and LERC 1 will earn my U-Lead certificate this Summer. Have been very active in lobbying and educating our legislators, both on organized Lobby Days and on several visits to Salem that 1 initiated. Went to Chicago last March to work on a massive organizing campaign that resulted in 47,000 new SEIU members, and opened the door for similar campaigns in Michigan, Oregon, and elsewhere. 1 work producing member made labor media with Dist 4 Productions. 1 am seeking this office because 1 enjoy fighting for working families, and my knowledge and experience, coupled with over 25 years experience on political campaigns make me uniquely qualified for this position. My goals for District 4, and 503 as a whole are to build union strength by educating our legislators and listening to our members Holding our legislators accountable and defeating anti-worker ballot initiatives. 1 currently serve on the CAPE Board as District 4 chair. • Shop steward for two years • Served on CAPE committee • President of CAT team which promotes additional monies that support our brothers and sisters in time of need • fund raising for these events During the 2005 arbitrations we fought for what we felt was fair for all our rights, hoping we would not have to go out on a possible strike. 1 was a very strong activist, in building solidarity for our union members. My skills are strong in leadership, delegations, communications, campaigning, coordination in team building. 1 am seeking more education in our Constitutions and By-laws, coordinate union campaigns and also educate other union members about their union rights. Implementing the district financial budget. My goals are to build that strong united voice for our union. Our members need the uplift in motivation to help them become active and fight for our rights wherever we work or live. It is important that we build strong solidarity for our union, for justice and member power. With that we will always be loud and strong winners. My goals for my district is to be the best activist, represent and delegate to all members, educate them as what we stand for - solidarity. The Biggest issues during my term would be the 2007 contract and fair wages, medical benefits, fair treat ment, lay offs, we stand to have a major fight on our hands. To resolve this issue, is to be a very strong activist in all campaigning, educating members why it is important to be part of our strong union, remind them we do not stand alone. Delegate through our office what will be needed. 1 am a very strong willed and minded individual, 1 believe in what is right and fair. When it comes to a debate 1 will be there loud and clear. 1 am very responsible and take my position very seriously. 1 will uphold my duties. DISTRICT 5: District Director (2 positions available) What are your qualifications for this office? Name Tera Martinez DHS I am self motivated and passionate in what I believe. I am able to motivate and energize others in a cause which has been shown by many worksite actions. I am very dependable and hard working. I have driven many miles to attend meetings as well as actions. I am a local steward, I have participated in Lobby Days, gathered petitions and signatures, organized and recruited members, canvassed, participated in phone banking locally and in Salem, worked with local media as well as participating in radio announcements. Other union experience: I had the great experience when working as a MOC organizer for SEIU . I gained much confidence traveling throughout the state educat ing as well as uniting people on common ground. I worked independently with many different organizations as well as universities. I had the opportunity to meet, work and network with many wonderful people. Why are you seeking this office, your goals? I am seeking this office because I can make a difference. It is important that SEIU 503 OPEU makes the effort that every part of the state is represented. It is my opinion that everybody needs a voice and I am willing to try to make that happen. Goals for your District? I would like to get a higher participation rate as well as getting to know more people on a one to one basis. I would like to bring the T back into our Union so everybody knows how important they are all the time and not just when times get tough. I want people to feel that they have somebody listening who truly understands and cares about their needs. Eastern Oregon has its own uniqueness in distance as well as rural needs. Biggest single issue/how to resolve? Other info: Getting membership morale and confidence back will be the hardest issue we will face. I know that listening and communicating to members is the first step. Also that timely responses are a strength building technique that I will bring to my position. I know that "I" can make a difference. DISTRICT 5: Assistant District Director (2 positions available) What are your qualifications for this office? Name Carlotta Davison Prestige Nursing Home ODOT * Why are you seeking this office, your goals? Goals for your District? Biggest single issue/how to resolve? Other info: 1 believe all people deserve the right to be treated with Respect & dignity. They deserve to make a decent wage & also have Health Care. 1 also think a safe workplace is important. To be a good listener, & take a stand on important issues. And be a leader. Making a stronger, united union. Expanding the union. Reaching out to non-union people. And keeping the ones we have united and strong, We have the cornerstone built - keep adding blocks. Health care is important to all people. See how others feel. I am strong voiced. I believe in the Union. I try to understand how people feel and what is important to our union members. We should work towards making things better for all union members. 1 am seeking this office to better my knowledge of how the union operates in Eastern Oregon. It is also an excellent way to meet people & learn about issues of other Locals. My goals for Local 503: 1. For Oregon to be a friendly place for laborers to live and work. 2. To further this fight for fair and affordable health care for all Oregonians. To assist my District Directors attain the members goals. To Increase District 5's capacity & ability to communicate with union members. No whining. Bring potential solutions with problems. Activating the membership. Showing members how this union works for them. Convincing members that their participation matters. My children are raised & out of the house. I have time to dedicate to union issues; with Valerie's support. I believe the labor movement goals are worthy of our efforts. McGinnis [ )ISTRICT Went to State Capitol to lobby for a provider tax to bring more money to nursing homes. Bargained first contract. I'm a shop steward, 1 am stepping up to the plate trying to get Initiative 105 passed. It's a very important issue. Union Experience: What are your qualifications for this office? 1 have been District 6 Director twice, A.D.D. once, and Forestry Local 629 President 8 years Other union experience: • Steward, South Fork - 2 years •Two times a MOC • NO on 57 • Organizer North Coast - 4 months Why are you seeking this office, your goals? I believe in our union and want to be part of the growth. I enjoyed representing District 6 in the past and would love to do it again. February 200(> Goals for your District?
