I would like to continue my involvement at the Board level. The members of the Board are responsible for determining the goals of the Union between General Councils and I would like the ability to contribute my experience in the decision making process. I also under stand the importance of listen ing to the members and advo cating their position at the Board and District levels. My goals for 503 are to strengthen the political arm of our Union so that we can more effectively serve our members. I've been a member with J SEIUOPEU Local 503 for over ~25 years. I’ve been an activist ever since I have been a member. I've been through 2 strikes; I'm currently an Executive Office for Local 200, Chair sub-local 200-18, and a steward. In the past I've been an Assistant District Director for District 2. I've been an Executive officer for Local 461, a Dist-3 Rep for Local 461, Chief Steward for District 3 Local 200, served on 2 Flying Squadrons, Chair the Women Council, a Rep on the women's council. I try to keep up on what is happening with the Union. I've been a delegate at the last 8 General Councils and a bar gaining Delegate since 1988.I marched on the World Trade Center in Seattle, Washington. In 1995 during the strike, I marched on the Capital in Salem. I've been an activist since I joined the Union in 1978. I talk with members daily; The Union has lost some of its Credibility with members. Members in DHS were upset when they didn't get a raise for the 2003-2005 contract, and lost step raises. I want to work on building the trust and get ting more members active. I want members to understand that it's their time to step up and make the union strong again, like in 1995 when 10,000 members marched on the cap ital in Salem. District 2 has the largest mem bership of all 6 Districts. We heed to get more people involved in the Union; they need to understand that to get better contracts, they need to be more active. Failure of Ballot measure 30. The cuts the government might make in State Programs. The deficit. I'm not sure how to resolve it, but believe Oregon does need some kind of State Tax to help. We need to keep members informed. Getting people active with the union. We are stronger together. I have over 5 years of member experience, I have been a DHS Steward for over 4 years. I have been co-chair of the MHDDSD local. Active mem ber volenteer. Organizing local union meetings, phone banking on Measure 30, 28, Presidential and Governor's campaigns, door to door neighborhood canvasing, organizing membership drives and worksite activities. I want to do my part to strengthen this organization. I believe actions speak louder than words and I am taking action to strengthen SEIU 503.1 want to see SEIU 503 organize more worksites. Help elected a labor friendly leadership in this country, and guarantee afford able health care and living wages for it's members. My goals are to increase mem ber involvement expecially younger workers, strengthen unity and make workers voices heard in the worksite. To increase member voter turn out and organize more worksites. I believe that the 2005-2007 contract negotiations will be the single biggest issue. SEIU 503 and the members will have a tough battle to preserve our health insurance, gain well deserved cost of living increases. I will do my part by organizing work site actions, attending bar gaining meetings and accepting nothing less than we deserve. 4 yrs as steward Very active in actions within my CWA Local. I find myself sought as an informed Steward locally. To get more information & help disseminate more info to membership To educate the membership & empower them to choose how their Local works for them. Dissention amongst the mem bership and barriers to com munication. I hope to help remove those barriers. I have: I know a lot about our home care local, but I want to learn more about our overall union and assist in building power in our union, both politically and in our internal structure. When I start something, I like to see it through; I'm committed and dedicated to our overall union. To get homecare workers more involved with the overall union. To help elect a pro-working family President in 2004. To raise public awareness of the importance of all public services and the need for stable funding. I think we have already done st good job of try ing to put a real face on the need for adequate public serv ices through our stories, rallies, phone banks, letters to the edi tor and earned media. We need to do a better job of telling the story of corporate loopholes and the inequities in Oregon's overall tax structure. It is my desire to play an active role in building a larger & stronger union, build relation ship & expand on community allies. Link Locals closer togeth er. Organize. Political awareness organize membership around issues that inpact them. These are hard times with more to come. Its more important than ever to mold & educate getting our members to run for office. Maintaining said health care. Educate and raise awareness, talk to co-workers, Pass out graphics, stickers, posters. Raise issue at meetings talk about problem wherever you go. I have served as a Homecare Council Director for District 2 for the past two years. I was on the first bargaining team for homecare and I served as a General Council Delegate in 2002.1 have completed stew ard training and have taken numerous courses through LERC, including Summer School. Union Experience: Show them what their potential is in union 1. Lead by example 2. Have a voice 3. Can make a difference My goals during my term are to increase membership and participation at the District level and stay informed on issues. Keeping members informed about issues and leg islation that affects their work ing lives and families and the strategies to focus the outcome in a positive way. The biggest issue we'll face dur ing my term is the loss of jobs and the constant attempt to contract out our work. By strengthening the Union through membership drives, including one-on-one conver sations about the issues, we will be able to be more effec tive in advocating our position with the Legislature. There is strength in numbers. This is a Union of the members and I believe in leading by example, lam reliable, depend able and commit ted. I currently attend all Board of Director meetings as a member observer. I am active mem ber volenteer, I have attend SEIU leadership training and currently working on obtain a U-Lead certificate from LERC. I believe in SEIU and want help make it a stronger organization. And that's how I see the Labor Movement making a differ ence. NOTICE OF NOMINATIONS & ELECTION FOR DISTRICT 2 SECRETARY & TREASURER For a nomination form, call 503-581-1505/1-800-452-2146 ext 150.
