Stewards Gather in Salem The Great American Beach Cleanup O ne o f O regon's m ore p o p u la r p u b lic p rojects is th e s e m i-a n n u a l beach clean up sponsored by Stop O regon L itter a n d Vandalism , SOLV. Chief stewards from a variety of SEIU Local 503, OPEU Locals Trained to develop the skills they need to effectively represent their co-workers. They discussed the new Grievance Database Tracking System which, once fully developed, will enable stewards to maintain an informational tracking systemthat will follow the progress of a grievance, as well as allow research on similar grievances. At the early June training, held at Salem Headquarters, they discussed ways to build the stewards’ program at the local level. T he SEIU L ocal 503, O PEU B oard o f D irectors has m ade a financial contribution for the fall clean up and now it is tim e for U nion m em bers to save the date and prepare to p itch in on Saturday, Septem ber 28. O ur U n io n's "zone sponsorship" w ill p lace o ur nam e and logo on 27,000 brochures going out to the public, business and other organizations. O ur nam e w ill be included in SOLV's statew ide new s releases and on signage at registration sites w ithin o ur zone. The SEIU L ocal 503, O PEU zone (Z one 5) is in the northern p art o f the coast, roughly from N eskow in and C ascade H ead to ju s t north o f Pacific City. It is easily accessible from Corvallis, Salem , Portland and A storia. Volunteers — lots o f them — are needed. Recently, 4,100 volunteer beach-com bers picked up m ore than 16 tons o f trash from O regon's beaches. M ore inform ation w ill becom e available as the date gets closer. T he clean-up lasts from 10 am to 1 pm. O ur participation on Septem ber 28 w ill help reduce h arm to coastal w ildlife, as w ell as keep our public beaches clean, attractive and safe.
