WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SEIU LOCAL 503, OPEU DURING YOUR TERM? As a local President I think it is very important to be as involved as possible to kind of pave the way for our followers. • To get as many of my. fellow employees involved as I can and try to help my fellow employees get a fair shake at contract negoiation time. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT? Help them to realize their size and strength. Incourage more participation throughout the discrict. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION W ILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW WOULD YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? The current State buget crisis. Incourage members to stay involved, and elect legislature that are labor friendly District 5 District Director Patricia K. Steward since 1996, Chief Steward, Statewide Stewards’ , Committee member, SDSD Labor/Management Team member Leadership abilities, Anxious to promote communications among members, Familiar with parliamentary procedures U N I O N E X P E R IE N C E N O T I T E M I Z E D A B O V E .• I have been an active union member since 1979, and attended and participated in 2 General Council conferences. I.have for many years, been a Union Activist, having participated in three strike preparations and walked the picket line in two strikes. I currently serve as a member on a Labor Management Committee in District #10. WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SEttJ LOCAL 503, OPEU DURING YOUR TERM? I am very interested in educating the general membership regarding members rig h ts, responsibilities, and opportunities. I want very much to bolster union activism in District #5 and help build a strong network system and leadership program so all union members know they are not alone with their work site issues and problems, whether they be stationed in a one person shop or a shop with 30 phis people. I want to help all members to understand they are the union and they all have a right to speak up!! WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT? Increase the number of active educated Stewards in the District, take the concerns of all District #5 locals to the Board of Directors and Executive Board. Encourage all District #5 members to speak up and be heard, to get involved in the operations of their Union and their local labor issues. I want to continue bringing training to District #5 leaders and membership alike to help them understand the workings of their union and their rights as workers. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION W ILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW OULD YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? Health Care Coverage for our Membership and families. I would want to reach outside the box, explore all possibilities and means to assure coverage for members. I really don’t know how we are going to resolve this issue. I do know that if we stand in solidarity and unity we stand a far better chance. Roger L. To continue to have input in the work and direction our union is heading in with the continuing i state. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT? To provide a voice in salem for region 5 at the board level WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION WILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW OULD YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? The Budjet short fall and continual attack at the intiative level is at die top of a very long list of issues we will be facing in the future. Shop Steward in Prineville since 1994 1995 Strike Coordinator in Prineville Organized a Steward training campout in 2000 WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FO R SEIU LOCAL 503, OPEU DURING YOUR TERM? I enjoy being a part of a strong & fast growing union in Oregon. I feel that our external team has done an outstanding job by bringing on board Homecare Workers and look forward to many more members in the future. My goals are to strengthen our internal organizing to better equip our members to be able to stand up and fight not only for themselves, but also others in their worksite and their community. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT? My goals are to improve our outlying offices, like Bend & Pendleton, so that we have a better structure to work from. I will continue to work hard to keep Central & Eastern Oregon in the Loop. I supported expansion of both these offices recently at a board meeting. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION WILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW OULD YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE FT? With all the threats or higher prices for insurance, contracting out jobs and political pressure from people like Bill Sizemore, I believe that the Day to Day increased work load that our members are dealing with is an issue that must be addressed Immediately. To solve this problem we must continue to pressure the legislature for more full time employees and not allow our numbers to fall. Patricia Ann Bender Homecare, Local 099 W HATAREYOUR QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS OFFICE? My previous background of experience through serving on many different types of c o m m ittees, coordinating state conventions, annual meetings, and area meetings as State President of the Oregon Employees Association has provided me with knowledge and experience. T h is experience has given me abilities to build teamwork, consensus building, mutual trust and cooperation of fellow workers. My serving on various committees , direct communications through newsletters and general correspondence has proved to be a successful venue. In my previous positions, I traveled extensively throughout Oregon and nationwide. I understand the time commitment and responsibilities of this position and I am willing to make the commitment. Please VOTE for me! UNION EXPERIENCE NOT ITEMIZED ABOVE: I have assisted with phone banking to gain new Union members and to insure votes for Measure 99. I spent an afternoon with a Union Representative knocking on doors and meeting with Homecare workers and their clients to seek input and seek new Union members. I traveled to Portland to a meeting and was portrayed on the video with regard to homecare providers and clients. I did a radio spot with a client as tool for information to our legislators. WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SEIU LOCAL 503, OPEU DURING YOUR TERM? I am seeking this office because I have leadership skills, I am assertive, have integrity and will represent all of the SEIU Union Members to the best, of my abilities. I would like to also improve our image, gain more Union members and to be an advocate for fair wages, health benefits and quality for all. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION WILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW WOULD YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? The most important concern will be budget cuts and constraints. If there are budget cuts then the impact to clients and providers will im p act all the programs that are ih place and any future program s During my term, I will strive to take an active role in m ak in g sure our Legislators are well-informed. This can be accomplished through written material, clients telling their stories, and coordinating meetings with key players. WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SEIU LOCAL 503, OPEU DURING YOUR TERM? To become more involved with and to bring new ideas to the union. My goal will be to better represent members of the union through work site involvement. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT?
