District 4 • For Director Lyn Beatty Local 461, Adult & Family Services QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE: Serving as an Assis tant District Director and District Director has helped me to develop better understanding of the Union’s mission and goals. I believe representing the mem bers in my District and improving the communication link between the members and the Board is essential. UNION EXPERIENCE: Labor-man agement team member; worksite Stew ard; General Council page and delegate; officer in Local; media spokesperson; Women’s Council, Civil and Human Rights Committee member. WHY SEEKING OFFICE: I would like to serve a two-year term on the OPEU Board of Directors and work to build District 4 member ship and participation. GOALS FOR OPEU: One area that I feel we need to work on is organizing our members so they understand how important their contribution can be in a democratic union. GOALS FOR DISTRICT : It would be great if we could have multi-Local meetings on a regular basis. BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE FACING THE UNION: The mean-spirited attack on public employees is a real threat to our members. PROPOSED RESOLUTION OF ISSUE: It seems to me we need to push on several fronts. We need a pro-labor "Legislature and we must put a personal face on the impor tant work we do. District 4 • For Director David L. Grenbemer Local 461, Adult & Family Services QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE: I have been a Union activist for the past 22 years. I presently serve on the Finance and Employee Benefits and Health Care Commit tees. I have served OPEU as Vice President, District Director, and As sistant District Director, Shop Stew ard, Contact Person. I have served on the following committees: Govern ment Relations, Citizen Action by Public Employees (CAPE), Staff Screening, Futures, Rules, Law En forcement, Executive Board, and board member of Local 461. I served as a member of the Southern Oregon Labor Council. WHY SEEKING OFFICE: I would apply my experience of the past 22 years with OPEU to strengthen growth and awareness through involvement of our membership, to strengthen the voice and involvement of District 4 membership/local gov ernments in the decision-making process, to see that our needs are heard and met. GOALS FOR OPEU: To work towards strengthening the Internal Structure of OPEU, Membership Representation, and Political Involvement. To ensure that OPEU remains a Progressive, Democratically Member-Run Union. GOALS FOR DISTRICT: To work to ensure a continual revitalization of District 4. To increase membership in volvement in the decision-making process. To see that District 4 issues are heard and met. To challenge decisions/ issues that are not in the best interest of the membership. BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE FACING THE UNION: THERE IS NO SINGLE BIGGEST ISSUE FACING US. THEY ARE ALL BIG ISSUES: THE PUBLIC EMPLOY EES PAY AND RETIREMENT, BARGAINING ISSUES, AND PRIVATIZATION OF JOBS. THERE ARE THE WORKLOAD AND HEALTH CARE ISSUES THAT AF FECT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US. EACH AND EVERY ONE HAS TO BE DEALT WITH. PROPOSED RESOLUTION OF ISSUE: To ensure that OPEU remains a Member-Run and Democratic Union. More members are involved in the decision-making pro cess. To strengthen the voice and involvement of Local Government Members. To establish and build a core of leaders in the workplace for the future. To open communi cation to membership. To involve ourselves in the political process of our State and Local Governments. how important their part in the UNION has become. I believe communication is the key. BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE FACING THE UNION: TAX REFORM and PERS. PROPOSED RESOLUTION TO ISSUE: Every mem ber needs to get out and vote and to be a well-informed voter. To educate our members — family members — friends, and neighbors and to network with other groups and organiza tions about the importance of state and local services. We need to remind everyone that we are taxpayers, homeowners, and serve our communities, too. OTHER INFORMATION IN SUPPORT OF CANDI DACY : I will devote the necessary time and energy to the Districts • For Director office, to see that decisions are made to protect the interest of the membership. Now is the time every public employee must work to make our Union strong. We can solve the major issues that face us TOGETHER. District 4 • For Assistant Director Beverly D. Eads Local 497, Jackson County QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE: Currently Jackson County Employees Association President; former Vice Presi dent; Union activist; General Council delegate. UNION EXPERIENCE: Steward training; self-directed work force training. WHY SEEKING OFFICE: To fur ther OPEU causes and goals in South ern Oregon and throughout the.stgte, GOALS FOR OPEU: To ensure more Union activism among our members. GOALS FOR DISTRICT: Same. BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE FAC ING THE UNION: Revenue shortfalls because of O&C funding, and how to deal with smaller budgets while keep ing Union members strong and active. PROPOSED RESOLUTION OF ISSUE: Self-directed teams; continuing education; explore collaborative bargaining. District 4 • For Assistant Director Alice Grimes Local 497, Jackson County QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE: I have served as District Director for two terms. I also have served as an Assistant District Director. UNION EXPERIENCE: Jobs or committees I have served — Secre- tary/Treasurer for District 4, Mem ber Representation, Civil and Hu man Rights, Professional, Finance, Local Government, Citizen Action by Public Employees (CAPE), Gen eral Council statewide committees. President, Vice President, Treasurer, Negotiating team member for JCEA. WHY SEEKING OFFICE: I want to continue to serve the District and the Union members. GOALS FOR OPEU: To aid all members of OPEU to protect their PERS benefits and to aid in getting the message out to work for tax reform so that we will have adequate funding to continue state and local services. GOALS FOR DISTRICT: District 4 has been active, but we could use more help to communicate to our members OTHER INFORMATION IN SUPPORT OF CANDI DACY: I can commit the time and work well with others. Biddle Local 471, Employment Department QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE: District 5 Director, two years; Assistant Director, two years; Citizen Action by Public Employees (CAPE), six to eight years, participated in screening of various legislative can didates; Attended SEIU Western Con ference, Oakland, CA., August 1993; Bargaining Delegate, Employment Department, 14 years, member of Col laborative Bargaining; member of Employment Worksite (Labor-Man agement) Committee; member of Ar bitration Screening Committee, six years; Umatilla-Morrow Central La bor Council, secretary-treasurer, 10 years, currently on the Executive Committee, trustee; AFL-CIO del egate to COPE (equivalent to our CAPE); Employment Local 471 Treasurer, 14 years; Dis trict 5 Civil and Human Rights Committee member; one of 12 who staged a sit-in at Kevin Concannon’s office; mem ber of Flying Squadron during strike, picketed a Farewell Bend port-of-entry, also at Astoria Motor Vehicles, Bridge on-ramp; various marches and demonstrations in Salem. WHY SEEKING OFFICE: Two years as District Director really only “gets your feet wet.” I want the opportunity to apply the things I’ve learned, things that can only be learned doing the job. GOALS FOR OPEU: We need to constantly strive for unity within our Union. We’re comprised of so many different agencies, different services, different individuals. Our strength as a Union depends on our unity as members. GOALS FOR DISTRICT: I’d like to improve communi cations within our District. A District newsletter would be one way to accomplish this. News sent out every other month, following the meeting of the Board of Directors is one consideration; another would be to send it quarterly. The cost of mailing it to our 1,865 members is an important factor. BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE FACING THE UNION: The PERS issue is the biggest problem we’re facing as a Union, perhaps the biggest single issue since I’ve been in state service! PROPOSED RESOLUTION TO ISSUE: OPEU and CAPE have the plan of attack in motion; we all just need to get behind it 100%!!! OTHER INFORMATION IN SUPPORT OF CANDI DACY : I believe in the TEAM concept, the TEAM ap proach. District 5 can have an unbeatable team. I want to be a part of that, a TEAM LEADER, if you will.
