Maintenance Committee, and is now the president of Chapter 338. A year-and-a-half ago he probably would have signed a Teamster card and passed some around. A good union steward is priceless. About a third of the people you try to recruit will say, “ I’ll join that damn union when it does something.” This is a lame excuse; it makes little sense, confront them with it. What would they say if we were invad ed?” I’ll join the Army as soon as the war is over?” As a model, I w ill explain what we have done at the University of Oregon to get organized and to b e g in to re c r u it new members. First, we worked hard to fill all negotiated union steward posi tions, because you will find that two-thirds, or more of your new members w ill be recruited by union stewards. How do you get union stewards? When I was president of Chapter 49, I would seek out the worst bitchers and give them a way to change things — become a union steward. I got one prime bitcher to re-join last year. He was very upset with the arbitrary and capricious manner employes were dealt with by management at the Physical Plant. He became a steward, started filing grievances, took Second, we formed a position of membership secretary, which I f ill. The c h a p te r voted $45-a-month for me to use solely for the purpose of recruitment, and membership maintenance. I would help members with pro blems and try to make life un comfortable for non-members. We have signed up 67 new peo ple since July 1, and we haven’t even started a serious drive. If you are in a fair share agen cy now, the ball is already begin ning to roll. You should already have 85 percent membership. If you don’t, get a packet of ap plications from your business agent, or Fred Hasle at OPEU headquaters. Pass them around to members and non-members, wallpaper your work area with them. If someone is already pay ing dues it can’t hurt much to sign a card. When they do sign, invite them to your next meeting and encourage them to par ticipate in some way. Fred Hasle is the staff person working with the Membership Relations Committee. If you have questions or wish to con ta c t me or o th e r m em bers o f th e committee, give Fred a call, at 1-800-452-2146, he w ill relay the (nessage. John Lennon summed up what to say to the non-member in a universal way in 1966: Try to see it my way, do I have to keep on Talking till I can’t go on? 4. TERRI ANDERSON 542 Morion SI.
