W hat legislators are faced w ith are more demands than ever before fo r pieces o f a recession- shrinking, budgetary pie. Among th is volume o f pending le g is la tio n is OSEA’s 1981 package. We w ill need to work hard to draw attention to our sp e cific interests. OSEA s ta ff m ust continue to build legislative support on a daily basis. OSEA mem bers m ust realize th a t th e ir e ffo rts w ill make real im pact on c ritic a l issues and that the greater th e ir par tic ip a tio n , the larger w ill be our piece o f the pie. Since the last session, OSEA has m aintained dialogues w ith every incum bent legislator. We have worked in over 50 w inning cam paigns and we have com m unicated our concerns to the 18 newly elected legislators. So we begin th is session well prepared. But much remains to be done. The management o f our in terest w ill require dally par tic ip a tio n as we help guide our la w m a k e r s th ro u g h th e legislative process. Inform ation w ill be required by legislators. Testim ony w ill be requested by many com m ittees. As I w ork in the C apitol th is session, I w ill be assisted by Eric Parker, w ho w ill w ork on retirem ent issues. These efforts by OSEA s ta ff w ill help us attain our goals, but more is needed. A strong and e ffective lobbying e ffo rt w ill require the com m itm ent and participation of OSEA m em bers from throughout the state. Your letters, your phone calls, and your in sig h t are m ost ef fective to o ls when presented to le g is la to rs fro m y o u r ow n d is tric t. You represent a strong voting block, as w ell as a vast in fo rm a tio n re s o u rc e and le g is la to rs understand these facts. To provide additional lobby strength, com m ittees are being organized to such address questions as changes in W orker C om pensation laws and ad ju stm e n ts to the retirem ent system . If you are interested in jo in in g these com m ittee efforts, please call Eric or m yself. During the course o f th is leg islative session, you may want to com m unicate d ire ctly w ith your Senator or Representative.
