Committee on Employment of the Han dicapped. Dave Backman, specialist for disadvantaged and. han dicapped programs at the Department of Education, received the award for ex ceptional contributions in furthering the employment of the handicapped. He was nominated for the John E. Fogarty Public Per sonnel Award for his ex ceptional accomplishments as chairman of the Oregon Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Han dicapped and his work in fur thering educational programs for disadvantaged and han dicapped students'. A former Marine who was disabled in the Korean conflict, Backman has been at the Department of Education since 1969. He recently completed his one-year term as Chairmah of the Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Han dicapped. Two members save life of boy in swimming pool Two OSEA members, counselors at the Oregon School for the Blind, saved the |ife of a multiply-handicapped boy discovered at the bottom of the school swimming pool during a recreation swim period July 17. Mary Daniels, Salem, pulled seven-year-old Brian Burge from the water and revived him with the help of Joyce Branc zek, Turner. Both are trained as lifeguards. According to Daniels, “I saw him at the bottom of the pool. NEW! When I got over to him and pulled him out, he was already blue. I pushed on his, lower stomach and Joyce applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and he started to breathe and scream,” she said. Daniels said the boy, part of a group participating in a two- week summer school, ap parently slipped out of a small ring-type life preserver in about three and one-half feet of water. By the time rescue firemen arrived, the boy was “alive, coughing and screaming and wanted to go home.” He was taken to Salem Hospital, Memorial Unit and later released. Daniels, a member of the Education Departnient Special. ‘Schools BURC credited their combined first aid and lifeguard training. She said, “We both knew what to do and it was a lot easier working together.” The women both are in their fifth year at the school. NEW! NEW!
