Page 10 The OSEA News June 8,1978 Endorsed candidates do well in primary OSEA’s political action effort in the Oregon Primary Election was amazingly successful as 36 of the 39 legislative candidates endorsed by the Board of Directors were successful. “This was a good example of political power in action,” according to OSEA Lobbyist Bill Wyatt. “There were several candidates nominated who might not have been without the active volunteer support of OSEA members,” he said. The 10 senate candidates ran up a perfect record with Democrats Jim Gardner, Richard Bullock, Walt Brown, Dick Groener, Keith Burbidge, Cliff Trow, Ted Kulongoski and Lenn Hannon winning along with Republicans L. B. Day and George Wingard. Only in district 11 where Rick Bauman defeated Brian Douglas, district 30, where Jeff Gilmour edge Margie Sherman, and district 51, where Royal Deland won out over Ray Barnwell, did OSEA-endorsed candidates for the legislature fail to win. Victors were Democrats Garland Brown, Mark Gardner, Vera Katz, Phil Lang, Rod Monroe, Gretchen Kafoury, Jim Chrest, George Starr, Jane Cease, Rick Gustafson, Glen Whallon, Ed Lindquist, Peg Dereli, Bud Byers, Max Rijken, Bill Granell, Ed Stevenson, Tom Throop and Chuck Ben nett, and Republicans Ted Bugas, Nancy Ryles, Mike Ragsdale, David George, Bill Rutherford, and Gary Wil helms. Wyatt said “There were some big and pl&asant surprises. Perhaps the biggest was in district 1, where our endorsed candidate, Garland Brown, upset four-term incumbent Dick Magruder. The other major upset was Chuck Bennett, whom we endorsed, defeating incumbent Jack Sumner.” Candidates endorsed for statewide races didn’t fare as well. Both Fred Heard, backed by OSEA for state superin tendent of public instruction and Ralph Groener, OSEA’s pick for labor commissioner lost in the primary. Heard, however, remains in the leadership of the senate where he has always been supportive of OSEA. The 1978 Oregon Primary helped prove that public em ployes can be effective in the political arena. According to Wyatt, “What is perhaps the most pleasing about this primary election is the amount of volunteer activity on behalf of OSEA-endorsed candidates undertaken by our members.
