30 ing nothing, as might be inferred by the language, but will be held to strict conformance with the Civil Service Rule XI, Section 5 which states that the dismissing action or demoting must be initiated by the appointing author ity in the department. It seems that the procedure contem plated by the State Highway Depart ment is commendatory and, when wisely used, should help in preventing the hiring of unqualified people, thus improving the morale and efficiency of its regular status employees. Oregon Winter Sports Places to Go; Things to Do We are indebted to the Travel In formation Department of the Oregon State Highway Commission for the following account of the what and where of Oregon’s winter sports activ ities. We hope this article will be of interest to our readers and will serve them well in planning participation in healthful outdoor exercise and recre ation. Oregon w inter sports activities fo r th e 1949-50 w inter and spring season are off to an early, fast moving sta rt as a resu lt of substantial pre-season snows, the Oregon state highway commission travel inform a tion departm ent reported this week. Abundant, w inter-long snow depths are expected for all of the m ore than 20 snow sports areas to be in operation. Of these, 17 are in Oregon’s 13 national forests, w ith others at C rater Lake national park, on non-federal lands at the sum m it of th e Sis kiyou m ountains and at local points near towns and cities. Of innovations and im provem ents, the m ajor projects are centered in Mt. Hood national forest, approxim ately 60 miles east of Oregon’s metropolis of Portland. Here the first aerial tram w ay in the F ar West is scheduled for operation this w inter carrying skiers and visitors from G overn m ent Camp 3.5 miles, w ith a lift of 2500 feet, up the slopes of Mt. Hood to Tim ber- line Lodge. I The Timberline ski area, above th e 60 foot elevation, reports the installation of platter-pull lift, 2000 feet long w ith an per cent average slope. The m ile-long c h a ir-lift covers a vertical rise of 1000 feet and is in operation through out th e year, being po p u lar w ith sightseers in sum m er. A 600-foot p ractice tow is in operation daily fo r “lim bering u p ” and for th e p ractice of ski fundam entals. Slopes above T im berline connect with th ree m iles of sh eltered tra ils to G overn m ent Camp to offer excellent skiing in all types of w eather. S pring an d sum m er s l ^ |^ ing is accelerated by a new tow on t ^ H P alm er snow field, ab o u t one-half m n ^ F above th e ch air lift. A new th re e -la n e high w ay from G overnm ent Camp to Tim berline is scheduled to be read y fo r w in te r travel this year. T im berline Lodge, itself, accom m odates 100 guests, supplem ented by dorm itory ac com m odations. Ski rentals, ski instructions and a com plete sports shop are available during th e season. M id-w inter tim berline snow is from eight to tw en ty feet deep, w ith an average te m p e ra tu re of 24 degrees above zero. Space is available at Tim ber- line for th e p ark in g of 700 autom obiles. M ultorpor ski area south of G overnm ent Camp on state highw ay 50 offers rope tows of 1,200 feet w ith a lift of 500 feet, one of 300 feet w ith a lift of 50 feet. A, B and C jum ping hills are available as well as sporty dow nhill and slalom terrain . West of G overnm ent Camp, th e Tom-Dick ski bow l provides a public ski shelter, chair life of 3500 feet w ith a rise of 800 feet, sup plem ented by tw o rope tow s of 700 and 500 feet in length. The fo rm e r has a rise of 250 feet, th e la tte r of 100 fe et each. N orth of G overnm ent Camp, W indy Hill has tw o rope tows, each 400 fe et in length and a rise of 75 feet. The S um m it area east of G overnm ent Camp operates th re e ski tow s of 1000, 40 ^b and 600 feet lengths w ith lifts from 100 150 feet.
