29 "This does not make me an inspector, I am, or should say, will be, working on termination of navel contracts. Broadly speaking this has to do with settling with contractors for the un completed portion of terminated con tracts. And it promises to be just as simple as it sounds. " I had three weeks at the Army In dustrial College in Washington, D.C., at the pentagon, and one week of lec tures from the Navy. The school was valuable experience— sort o f an easy transition from my seagoing days back to civilian activities. " I was pretty confused at first as it was all law and accounting, and those are two subjects I’ve given very little thought to in the last 2^4 years. "T h at Washington, D . C. duty sounded like good duty for a sailor be fore I got there, as I heard there were 14 women for every man. But as usual with rumors, it just wasn’t so. The proportion is only 8 to 1! "T his Stateside duty isn’t bad, though. But I certainly wish I’d told them I was from Detroit. Then maybe they’d have sent me to the West coast.” From Weisbaden, Germany, Sid H offm an writes: " I t ’s been a long, long time since you wrote, but I can account for all the time— and this is it: 30 N ov. to 15 March— 'In transit’ no time for letters. "16 March to 29 May— Procrastina tion by SDH. "B u t to answer your letter: "1 . CPA comes through regularly. "2. Don’t let stacks of paper from Barney fool you into believing he works overtime. "A nd now to give you some news of myself: Censorship is relaxed so I can say where I’ve been since leaving the States, and it’ll help fill us the space, so here goes: "W e came across in seven days, spent a while at Salisbury in Wilts, then three months in Exeter, then another short period in Salirbury, and then we went to London. We were there from Feb. 3 to Aug. 6. I went through the old- fashioned raids and the buzz-bomb raids. I counted 36 of the former and over 300 of the latter. Our office was bombed out once so we had to move. We lost quite a few records and some equipment. Since hitting the continent we’ve been in Periors, Laval, Versailles, and Verden. We had seven months of Verden and that was seven months too many. We came to Weisbaden the 27th of April so have been here a month. It is a rich resort town about 60 per cent bombed out, but still very beautiful. "O u r office is in a bank, and I have the President’s place. The bank is about the size of the U.S. National in Salem, but it is square in shape. The Krauts were moved out to make room for us. SALEM REALTY CO.
